BURN THEM WITH FIRE! Their nests are incredibly insulating though so it has to be a hot fire. Tried burning a trashbag full on a half assed fire, maybe a gallon of liquid boyscout poured on top of the nests to help it along. Keep the fire going for maybe 4 hours. Next day they were crawling all over the unburned part of the brush pile. Vile, but impressive, but vile.
 
I could still smell motor oil through a carbon mask while bushhogging with a leaky old tractor.

Imagine if that plant burned like a giant firework snake. Didn't south park do that?
 
I would guess hydrogen sulfide or something similar. As a water tank i assume it's before they treat it, so you would likely have organic decomposition going on in there. Absolutely zero excuse for that to happen, ever. Dude had zero business trying that, and now he's dead and his kids will have to grow up without him. I hope his company loses their ass over that.
