Nope, tree was plumb and straight.

This was a forest tree not a yard tree if that makes any difference.

Hmm. Our shag bark cedars will do that from time to time, but not very long lengths. How long a log was it that split?

Hickory is notorious for splitting in the logging/sawmill world.

Wasp nest in dead oak today. Got one side of the top on the ground, got stung, cleaned up and revenge will be mine come cold weather.

Funny thing was.....
They took no offence to a pole saw cut on the tip of a hanging limb from the lead they are in. We brushed the creek bank and nothing. Strapped the trunk, nothing. Cut a low limb while I was making my way up, nothing. But boy howdy, when you cut the lead opposite them and the whole tree shakes to the root crown 🤪
