How'd it go today?

It's never too early to complain about heat! :^D I'll wear the one Jonny sent me. Wasn't too bad today. I think it was ~68°. Warmer than I'd like, but better than the last couple days have been. Humidity isn't bad. Probably about the best it'll be til October.

edit:
Oh, and the boss' daughter gave me a tart; an easter present. I got one last year too. She makes them, and they're really good...

My son started spring break, so he and the part timer helped get 2 nasty conifers out of a crappy yard position. 60+ footers, one twin-stemmed, all in the back corner of a yard behind a wall of rhododendron, and a little 3ft. wide access way along fence. Trees went over both neighbor's fences, so lots of light rigging and tag lines to get out of jail. Stupid bar on my MS201 had the sprocket snap in half, so that was the only hiccup solved by using my old MS193. Still have an 80+ foot fir to deal with there, and at least 2 trailers of wood to cart away (chipped 90% of both trees today, and did a nasty Scotch pine and another big fir there as well other days). Going back tomorrow to try and wrap up.

Took the family to COSI today. It was ok. I would’ve enjoyed it more if there were less than half the people there. Just to crowded. We stopped and had dinner at a small diner in Belleville that is in an old rail car. Food was decent. Then after getting home I unloaded the mini and moved trailers around. Checked the hook up elevation on the new one with the suburban and off to the parts store to get a new receiver. Wasn’t as cheap as I hoped. The normal ones are rated for 5k capacity. Trailer has a 9990 gvwr. Had to step up and the next thing they had was 17.5k capacity. What a PITA trying to do things the correct way. Tomorrow will start off miserable since I have to go to the BMV for trailer tags and then the marina for kayak registrations. After that it’s an Easter egg hunt at the FD followed by coloring eggs at my father in laws. Might have to make the grass shorter Sunday.

Sold some work in the morning, three trees, one massive silver maple, a huge box elder that looks like an umbrella, and a Norway maple wrapped up in some wires. The job is for my wife’s grand folks so I had to offer a family discount but they are still paying some as we will be there a week.
Then I went to look at a wind thrown spruce but the guy didn’t like my price. So it’s probably on the neighbors shed this morning. The root plate was breathing pretty good about six inches of movement while we were talking. I offered to put a line in the tree if I had the job but he declined. Oh well.

The neighbor gave him my card. I did work for him six years ago. The job is in Union Grove an hour each way. So I may have been high price wise for a forty minute job but four man hours on the road alone. That would be half day rate for me so I gave him the number of an outfit closer to him. Nice guy tho.

Did some rec climbing with treeaddict today. Got into a couple tulip poplars. On the way to his place, I stopped and got a jug of Aspen fuel. Been wanting to try it for awhile now. $27 tax included for 1.3G. Pretty good price I think. It'll go to work as a fuel backup in case I run out of corn free gas.

Mike also gave me a fantastic table he made...

It's perfect! Exactly what I like to see in wood. Lots of character, and a beautiful finish. Thanks again Mike! It was a great day all around :^)

One thing I learned working in pines. They are all swaying different. SO if you look out and there is a decent breeze, they are all going diffy. Then you feel the sway you are experiencing on the tree you are strapped to. Focus on what is in front of you for a minute. The stem or limb you are strapped to or in front of. It will sync you. I never get sea sick or car sick unless I am sick. But sometimes, that will do it. So try that. Look for something that has less movement. Focus on something. Then back to work. then just focus on the work.

It could have been the motion and the fact I haven’t been feeling well and didn’t get good sleep the night before. Kinda like you said- all the right combinations! Good technique Stephen!! Appreciate you sharing that!

Cleaning, sharpening and overhauling equipment after the big job.
Bent my polesaw, worse that it already was, bouncing on it to try and bend it back, it's mostly ok but definitely leans the the right.
I need a new longer rope, had to join and old one to the end of my existing to have enough on one tree.
Hitchcord on HH needs replacing, wood chips packed in every place possible in my harness...

Well, shit. I went to McDonalds for breakfast with the intention of going to aldi, but aldi's parkinglot was empty. Get online to check hours, and it turns out they close on easter. That's inconvenient, but I like seeing stores take off every so often. Hope the employees all get paid for the day. Too many stores try to cater to dumbass consumers, and give them everything they want, when they want it, at the expense of the employees. Opening on thanksgiving is a good example. People need to understand that life sucks, and you don't always get what you want(Isn't that a song?!).

Did a little solo on a walnut take down.
My right knee really does not like me being in spurs any more.
The end of my climbing is near, I fear.

Took a good sized chunk home for the apprentice, Emil.
He has become totally infatuated with woodturning.
Inspired by some of my stuff, and he fails to see that there is a 25 year learning process in doing what I do at a lathe.

Anyway, we got him a lathe and he is training.
I still have to get him past the "wanting to turn cool stuff" and into " Do your friggin' homework", which is him watching me turning something with a lot of detailing, then telling him to go home and copy it.
Be interesting to see if he has what it takes.

Put the new pump on my mattress last night and It feels good to have my mattress back to being right. Had to stretch good this morning though. Kids found their baskets quite quickly. I ran to the grocery store because somehow we ran out of breakfast sausage. Thanked the cashiers for being there on the holiday. At least they are on short hours today. Made a huge breakfast since my mother in law and her husband were coming over. She came, he didn’t. Now I’m searching for some motivation to bring another (and hopefully the last) tote of wood to the house. We’ve got a few nights getting in the low 30’s coming up. 38F right now but next Sunday is forecasted to hit 81F. This weather is driving me nuts.

Worked on my hitchless climb system today. So far it only seems to work on white pine. Just make a round turn on a branch, and climb on up. No knots necessary. That rope isn't gonna move. What's that? You say it isn't safe, and you want to use something like a HitchHiker? :^D :^D :^D, yea, good luck with that!

I said I wanted to smell like I had a pocket full of woodchips. Well, I got it. How long did you all say pitch lasts on stuff? :^D Got my pine mostly deadwooded, and barely got out of the tree with my stuff. I had to ratchet myself down an inch or two at a time, taking weight off the HH, smacking the lower bollard, and jerking the fixed side of the line(I was using mrs). Left one big branch. I thought it had a sprout coming off of it, but it was just something I knocked down from the top. I didn't feel like gearing up again. so I'll leave it til the tree's less sticky. I also freeclimbed my spruce, and took out a bunch of little deadwood. It was all a PITA, but still kinda fun. Pretty good day.
