How'd it go today?

Got my truck back! Still have to get everything organized, but it seems to be fixed. I hate playing gypsy with trucks. I carry *everything* in the truck whether I need it or not. It's like Felix's bag of tricks. When magic needs to happen, I can find the bit of junk necessary to make it work.

Otherwise, routine day. Blustery and chilly out. Magnificent! Burning my first legit fire of the season, where I really do want to make it warmer in the house. No windows open :^)

Helped out with a hazard tree removal today. Old walnut next to the roadway where George Washington marched his troops after the Battle of Cooch’s Bridge on their way to the Brandywine. The butt log was 11,400 pounds despite being hollow at the base.

That's a big boy. I was gonna say it might have seen Washington, but a check with wikipedia says they live to ~130 years, so even if it were exceptional, it would be unlikely. Cool tree though :^)

At the cut 16 feet up I counted 158 years of growth rings, so that ‘average’ is a bit less. Was on a south-facing slight hill with good water availability.

Nope. That’s David. We worked together about 38 years ago. I set slings and he cut from bucket. I may be old but he has transplanted kidneys and liver. On very large trees that are manual removals (can’t reach with a crane) we take half a day each in a tree - taking care of us old geezers.

Laid out bridge piles today...

My work pics aren't very exciting :^D I really like using those nails for the stakeout. Got turned on to them from another job, where the contractor requested them. It's a 60d nail with a chaser. Really easy to set, and only cost ~25¢/each for the combo. 22 of them for this structure. Also laidout shoring on the pier.

Got home a little early, started reorganising truck, and cut/banged straight some rebar I scavenged from the site. Got a fire going now, and I'll probably eat lunch. Haven't stopped for it yet.

Jim, would I be correct in thinking your surname is a Conrad? Don’t know where I got that from though.

BUT you did come to mind yesterday. I am a big fan of the show, MeatEater by Steve Rinella. He was on Joe Rogan last week and they were discussing hunting of course and one of the books Rinella wrote about 12 years ago.

The book is called American Buffalo and he talks about growing up and his fascination with the American Icon. He covers the history and at one point discusses Buffalo that were sold and shipped around the States to try and save the species.
He mentioned the Conrad family and the Conrad Buffalo herd in Montana. Great audiobook.

I have probably got the wrong end of the stick... but to get back in topic.

Today I have been cutting trees, getting my car serviced and listening to stories about the great American Bison Bison. 4252536B-0E06-47E6-98B0-0A00E7CF0AC4.png

Back in the day, I had to listen to Stranglehold at least 1x/day to stay balanced :dude: :|:

Lotta the Amboy Dukes music was awesome- Call of the Wild, Living in the Woods....

Rainy. Very nice relaxing morning with GF.

Learning about RV furnace troubleshooting for GFs camper.

Practicing guitar a little.

Viola lesson for the kiddo tomorrow, after a cable and brace finale to a (pruning/ preservation for a change of pace) project.
Weather permitting, probably climb a big dead grand fir on Saturday.

Did this last week
Worked up this hard leaning poplar for my niece
She said it was oak lol IMG_20201104_155539.jpg
It was leaning heavy towards a loaded pear tree and powerlines IMG_20201104_132908.jpg
Heart rot IMG_20201105_113750.jpg
It cut ugly
Winch don't work
So we wedged the 450 and pushed it up and over
I tickled it with a zoo city 372
The dozer operator said that'll make your heart go pitter patter.
