Made some progress on my evaluation project for the VA hospital. Shit ton, maybe a metric shit ton of trees to look at.
Large site impacts have degraded the trees. I'm finding decent amount of Phellinus pini (red ring rot heart rot) and some more Phaeolus schweintzii (old tree root disease). The 4'- 5' doug-fir that blew over had P. schweinitzii, I believe.
Near a lake, so lots of wind, and many tops in a lot of trees. Histories of blow out tops, regrowth, big long pendulant limbs, reiterations. Looking at many 40"+ firs. Some nice Geary/ Oregon White Oaks. Interesting. Been developed over the last 100 years.
I don't think that my report will fall on deaf ears. Good volunteer labor force to help with mulching, instead of total stripping of nutrients and lawn.
Feels like this is going to be an opportunity to make a difference in a substantial little chunk of urban forest. The overall site, including the golf course is 344 acres +/-. Lots of parking included.
I guess I looked at 200-300 trees so far, in reasonable depth for a VTA.
These pictures turned into a jumbled mess. I'm just leaving it for now, and going to light a fire and catch a fire.
