How'd it go today?

 By the time I finish this job I probably won't want to hear that word again...

Fair band name though!

Ran a 10k mini-x for the first time. Loaded logs out of the house building alder clearing job. 41,000 pounds, give or take. 3.5 loads on my friend's kboom. 21' max. Hoping for some veneer logs, not holding my breath, but some nice saw logs at least. Boxer did its part. Sometimes it was way faster to run the boxer up the hill with smaller logs than the mini-x.

Glad to have that wrapped up. Might get a rough scaling on the logs on Tuesday. Paid on Friday. Should be interesting.

Good to use the 10k machine for those logs. I really will need a 17k excavator for the preschool, or maybe a arch and the 10k rubber track machine, or both. Would be nice to get export logs, 26'-40'.

Back to an HOA job that got postponed. Climb and chunk down, no cleanup, green maple and dead fir. A tiny bit of pruning.

I cut firewood this morning with a friend of mine, some guy had trees dropped to build a garage, and got tired of looking at the pile, take some leave some type deal. He just needed them cut to length so I overloaded my trailer as usual (I really need to get a stronger trailer and bigger truck). Then I went to the neighbor of last week's trimming job. I had quoted them 600 to remove a 45 ft tall holy tree (I had never seen one that was not a bush). I left that quote with the client I was doing the trimming for, and was told they did not have the money for the holy right now. Sure enough a few days go by, more holly berries and junk fall, and I get a call to come look at it again and talk to them about it. I thought they were going to try to haggle on price, turns out they just wanted to make sure I was legit enough to handle it (it is completely boxed in by the house and power, phone, and cable lines). So I got the go ahead for the takedown, plus stump grind, and they are cleaning up. :D

Yup. Needs to be dried fast though or it will stain.
That or treated with citric acid.

It is my own invention.
When one rough turns bowls the problem is that when they dry too fast, they split, but when they dry slow, some of the lighter woods like holly, maple etc. will stain.
I experimented with different ways to avoid that and found a dip in a solution of citic acid to be the most efficient. Just dip it in the solution and let it dry as usual.
The staining is usually caused by mold/fungus and they don't like a low PH environment.
The method has really caught on among danish woodturners.

Was hoping to pick up my truck from the body shop today but won't be ready till Monday now. My auto insurance has a $80 a year clause that covers loss of vehicle use while in shop so I've been driving a 2015 Chevy Silverado 4x4 for the last 5 days.
Anyways I put a insurance claim on a deep scratch I put down the passenger side of my Dodge last winter. $4000 worth of damage to paint the whole 1 side as the old paint has to be replaced with a water based paint which is law in Canada.
I negotiated between 2 auto body shops and the better shop said for an extra $1000 they'll paint the whole truck. Works out costing me $1200 with $200 deductable for a $5000 paint job and get use of the rental truck included for a week.
Won't be looking to buy another new pickup for years to come now. Just saved myself a few bucks.....now to look into a mini loader and dump trailer.

Interviewed an experienced 38 y.o. guy. He's going to start next week. Union carpenter work has been slow and he needs more work. Lives only a few miles and minutes from me. He has other irons in the fire, too. I'm hoping he's looking to get his foot in the door and show me he got some skills worth paying for, without major drama.

Good luck Sean. I've had to sit through interviews with 3 new people this week, none of it tree related. People will tell you anything in the interview. . .

On the tree side, I got two young guys and a loader to finish cleanup.

And transplanted these little ducklings per the customers staked locations.

Now I'm going to stay up late and watch some movies!

Cheers.

Drove four hours round trip to look at a removal that will cost the HO more in a trip fee than the work hours will cost. Sealed the deal from 40' up a tree today. Who wudda think it?

Wow, they couldn't find anyone closer or you're just THAT good? Cool tidbit about closing the deal up the tree, looks like that deck would make the removal a little trickier though

HO clean up.:)

Also, I have 5 taller trees in close proximity to rig from. I have also lowered parts of a tree trunk down through a roof using the mini with the forks on it. You just cut low to the deck. Then cut square notches below the deck to hold with the forks.then cut a fire wood round out below the forks. Raise forks. Remove round. Lower piece and repeat as necessary. Then ALAP stump. I can also suspend the same piece. Lowering it instead using eye bolts.

All things equal weather and smoke venting wise today should be the day I light off my largest wood fire yet! Pics for sure.

I did this estimate for Manitoba Conservation [DNR] the other week. Tall dead white spruce wood peckered at the pedestal, overhanging a walkway to our nearby Pisew Falls.
Nice environment to work around.

Thanks Jim, isolated but a real paradise. Only one major highway that goes past this falls right into town. Paved all the way south to the US border

Looks like you've got some good stuff to rig to if it comes to that hey?

I took a little weight off each of these before the drop. Had a 3:1 pulling a 5:1 with progress capture. Worked slick.
