There are many edible mushrooms here, I only know a few of them. It seems like every time I go out this time of year I see a type I have never seen before.
Over-fishing and habitat loss. Or habitat loss and over-fishing. People have differing opinions on which is more to blame.
Over-fishing is easy to understand...habitat loss is more complicated. Dams and culverts; river, creek, stream, and wetland degradation from development, pollution, and resource extraction (logging, gravel harvest, mining) all get into the picture.
Here's some sockeye lox I finished up today from the summer fish. I'm giving one of the fillets to some friends who give me homemade sausage... this is what subsistence is about up here.
Delivered the lox to my friend and came back with some caribou summer sausage. He's Polish and from Wisconsin originally, so the sausage thing is big with him. Bout ready to break some out for dinner tonight!
We had an instant gas water heater we weren't using. Traded it to a friend for a big crayfish and lamb hindquarter. Crayfish is history, lamb is in the freezer.
