How'd it go today?

Well the 650 decided I didn’t put enough money into it yet. Damn key switch (fairly new) decided to stick in the start position and with my earmuffs on did not hear it. After about twenty minutes there was smoke and the starter went kaput. I happen to have a new switch and the starter should be here tomorrow. This was after work at home trying to get some hours in so I could re-torque bolts this weekend. The dang starter was still hot two hours later. Glad it didn’t catch fire. Hoping the flywheel is ok. Couldn’t see well enough in the dark to check.

Similar happened to me with my Avant last year. 25hp Kubota engine, new starter was over $600!!! Saved the old one to have rebuilt locally for a spare.

Kubota parts have a rep for being high. John Deere too.
atleast you don't have to call the dealer to get your new parts programed with kubota!

buddy of mine has a 3033E, ripped the throttle position sensor off with a stick, bought a new one and installed it, then found out he had to drag it onto a trailer and take it to the dealer so they could program the new sensor, cost him a bunch of money and time that he should have never had to pay

I would like to mention, on my Kubota when I ripped the quick coupler off the end of the boom which took a lot of parts with it, I called the dealer to let them know that I was headed their way and to get a rental fueled up for me

7 days later I had my machine back, the only thing I had to pay for was the grapple bucket for the rental skidsteer, they warrantied the repair and got it done as fast as they could, never once heard of Deere doing that, no way it hasn't happened, I just haven't heard of it myself, which is odd because most of my family is from Moline and worked at Deere in a past life

Programming parts is going to become more and more common, unfortunately. Working on our own equipment will be difficult for a lot of repairs. They took the dipsticks out of automatic trannys, now working on doing it to engines. They come up with new dumb ideas daily.

part of why I'm considering picking up another 80's-90's medium duty to build another chip truck out of, cheap, easy to work on, and anyone has parts, brand doesn't matter on these older MDT's

aside from the dodge, all my stuff will run off a single wire if I need it to, parts are available most anywhere (besides the Giant, might have to make those parts myself if the dealer can't get them, no aftermarket parts for them)

now, I don't need dipsticks in any of my stuff, I just make sure its got a puddle underneath it before I start it, can't leak if theres no oil :)

There is a section of the sawmill driveway that was beyond trying to grade it with the tractor, so I dug down 2' with the backhoe, completely digging out all bumps, dips, and holes. I then put the box blade on made it into a super highway. I then cleaned out the ditch, and put a couple of big rocks on the edge to keep the grain truck out of the Bermuda triangle of mud. It would take more than one Big Rig Wrecker to get that 50 ton truck out of there. This is my small victory for the day.

Good choice with ripping with the hoe before grading. I can't seem to convince local contractors and engineers that you need to use the rippers on the graders to break up the pot holes prior to grading. Just filling them in is a waste of time because they come right back.

Hopefully I’m not boring y’all with green iron? Having fun, it’s in my blood/programming from early childhood. Test ran the second two engines yesterday. The fuel lines, etc. were in bad shape so it took all day. 🤦🏻‍♂️ last one, the non turbo sounded horrible cranking so I pulled the pan, discovered nothing but that it has the stronger rod bolts which is good. Guess maybe the starter is the noise. Didn’t clatter running. Coolest sounding inline 6 I’ve ever heard.

The video is the LDS-465, the higher hp version.

Yesterday I was messing with engines in the 3 wall pressure washer bay and I hear some sheetmetal banging a little outside. Normal when a breeze come thru, but then it gets loud, intense like someone beating on it, and the sound is moving. What the…?! I walk around the back and there this huge dust devil, biggest I’ve ever seen, tearing through the yard throwing stuff everywhere, even some heavier stuff, slamming it again the storage containers, etc. Moved through our yard to the fuel station and scattered all the 55gallon steel drum trash cans. Mini tornado.

Then a few minutes later, the metal structure I’m in and the big main shop start rattling, humming, drumming, like an earthquake…but the ground isn’t shaking. No military helos in the sky like sometimes. What the devil now?! Turns out it was a guy across the street that has a sound system in his suburban that can ratttle a whole neighborhood. 😳

I wish I had your knowledge/ability!
More like grim determination and school of hard knocks. Eh, actually I research a lot and ask questions. Sometimes I wonder why I do the hobbies I do. Sometimes it’s a blast, elation when the old thing roars to life or the big tree hits the ground. Sometimes it’s miserable frustration and hard, dirty work. It’s like how people how grow up in dysfunctional households tend to self sabotage when things get good. We return to what we know because it’s familiar and comfortable…even if it’s not?

Strange thing yesterday. Last engine, one I pulled the pan on…the oil had a smell. Smelled like my dad’s mil truck. His was gas powered and mine are all diesel so they usually smell different. Took me on a time warp.

I think at least once and probably twice when I was little he fired the old girl up and I was in it when the yellow jackets came out all angry.

I don’t like those things.
