How'd it go today?

So, I stuck the end of a 500kbtu weed burning torch over the intake and regulated the engine rpm with the valve on the handle.
We used to use a cutting torch in the intake ,it worked .

Real old Cats equipted for cold weather had an alcohol burner built into the intake manifolds with a spark that came off the pony mag .If the pony would start eventually the diesel would too given enough time . White smoke ,bing , bang ,pop, hiccup fart a dozen times then putsy putsy .Two cylinders, then 3 then finally all 4 . Oh the joys of an old diesel about 10 above zero .

I thought of that when I saw the picture. The side, not shown, is lower.Sloping ground, you know.

Brian, you know that tree very well. It's the Coombs tree:)
Jerry beranek took that picture and also the other one, of the Goose ridge Tree.

I see you put the big bar on for the photo op.:D

Al, a friend of mine has a Cat D-315 genset and was talking about the preheater in the manifold. I asked him if any of his cats would start at 20. He said to give him and hour or two.

Stig that is a good read, even if I have to only read the pictures8)

Al perfect description of the old cat firing:lol: Dad had a big ol dozer w/ pony motor and I remember it just like you posted;)

Dave just give me two hrs:lol::lol:

V enjoy the zoo;) hope you find the perfect dress for the special occasion!

I remember the old pony motors too! Think I had all but 2 converted to electric start before I left. That was a daily ritual for us, we had it down to under 45 minute8) Course we bought ether by the case!

45 minutes?:O

In warm weather, the startup on an IH is less than two minutes. In cold weather, it may take five or six. My genset doesn't have an individual throttle, so with the bad solenoid, it is fouling the gas combustion chamber. When I get that fixed, I can crank start it just a few pulls of the crank.

Were talking insulated coveralls weather and big 46-a d-8's, not t-shirt weather:P
We could start em lickety split in warm weather too if they ran often

Went to meet my Father in law and Bro in law at a ranch that was going to let them cut firewood. Started up a canyon and a couple guys were coming down in a durango, said they slid off the road and there was a trailer halfway in the road. I kept going and squeezed by while chatting with old monkey on the phone. Went through several bad spots and wondered how they had gotton through this as my father in law is not much for driving in the slick and it kept getting worse. Almost to the top and spun out, slid back aways, bid Darin farewell. Got stopped, stuffed my pintle hook under tire, shoveled dirt off cut bank into the road and got on top. Father in law called and said he spun out at the trailer. Oh! I was ahead of him:|:. Decided to drive around the mountain rather than going down the slip and slide. By the time I got there my bro in law had gotton him outta the ditch, a neighbor was pissed about the trailer and pushed it across the road and over the bank:O Those guys are gonna be hacked when they get back! Any who, slung more dirt in the road and we all came down no worse for the wear!

Last time I got stuck and sliding like that I was on my way to Klamath with a truck full of passengers and a full trailer in tow. Hit ice and could not move with out losing total control of both truck and trailer. Had to call two tow trucks and get hauled out back to the 5. $500.00 later I was thankful I had a towing policy on my insurance

when the snow packs up like that I usually try to nurse the truck along skirting the shoulder, hope for gravel underneath and less packed snow/ice. or I turn around and go home, not many things are worth that kind of risk if you can do it another day ;)

edit: I guess no one carries chains?

Moping today. Plowed until 5 a.m., slept only 2.5-3 hrs. Had some waffles, plowed my driveway, then fell asleep again at Ashly's parents house.

Round one of Supercross tonight, starts at 11. Hope I can stay up.

More snow on the horizon too, tonight into tomorrow, then Tues/Wends. Show me the money.

As far as that goes ,the funeral and support there of is for the living .The dead could care less . My wifes' friend needed Mrs. Smith and her I .Snow covered roads etc .
