How'd it go today?

That really sucks Brian, I'm sorry man! I'm bad about not always taking everything I need, I try to be uber thorough when leaving though! I've had a couple of guys try to stash saws under the trailer, they only did that once after I ripped them! "Out of sight, out of mind, I want to trip over it all day, then I remember to grab it!"

Went to my sons JV game, didn't expect him to play much since they really don't play the freshman except in the freshman game. Much to my delight he played every offensive snap at tackle, left and right as they were running some silly permutation of the wildcat. He's stoked. They even won, 25-0.
.

Awesome. I always miss football at this time of year. Haven't coached since I took my current position 8 years ago...

I'm really looking forward to when my boy is old enough to play.

Defensive end is a tough position. The job is containment on a run, it's your corner, and you've got a bunch of guys who want to clean your clock when they do a sweep, and also can have responsibility on a pass....don't get burned on a bump and run or a streak. Run over people on a blitz too. It requires a lot of toughness and athletic skills, kudos to the boy.

Reggie White for the old Eagles....just scary.

Wedding anniversary today. 7 yrs!!!! Crew is out pruning street trees, I'm skiving off with the mrs, probably gonna go to the shooting range......she just lurves the semi auto 12 gauge.

Went to a hot spring. I did some removals at a hot spring hotel during the summer, and the manager told me to come and use their bath when I want. I'd seen him a few times after and he always kindly reiterated his offer. A cold day, my wife and I went. Super nice, he gave us some soft towels and escorted us up to the fifth floor where the bath is.

Picture windows all around, a great view of the woods and mountains when sitting in the hot water, and mostly had it to myself. The men and women are separate of course in this day and age, but some lady made a mistake and walked in naked, though it is clearly posted which is which. It was very funny to see her reaction when she saw me and realized her error, alarm and get out quick! No bigee, and I saw that she vamoosed so quick that she left her panties in the dressing room. Great way to spend a couple hours, extremely relaxing.

Lucky you.
I love hot springs ( and naked ladies).

I Killed a black locust of middling size today.
The HO was a guy in his mid 80es who had brought his best friend ( also 80+) over, so they could help out.
They reminded me a lot of my own dad ( same age) who also cannot get used to the fact that he is not able to do much in the way of work anymore.
So even though I could have pieced the tree out and thrown the branches over the roof clear by hand, I set up a pulley and had them help me out lowering some small stuff. Very small, since I didn't want to have to get the Porty out.
Good thing I had an old non locking steel carabiner around, to use on the bull rope, because my triple locks were too complicated for those guys to work.

Well, they had a good time, and so did I.
I was running ahead of scedule, the weather was great, so spending a little extra time lowering some branches was fine.

Locust is rare here, so I brought the whole log home in blocks for one of my woodturners.

We have an endless amount of Black Locust here, Stig, especially growing along the rivers. I've turned some too and built furniture from it. I like it's simple character, but hard stuff.

I've turned one piece of Osage in my life, Tom, a vase about twenty-five years ago. It is really a beautiful and unusual color now. So Osage and Mulberry are legumes like Black Locust? I have some Mulberry, but haven't used any of it yet. I hear that is is easy to work with, and feels pretty light when you pick it up, so it must not be so hard like the others.

Our Mulberry is a dark tan color, at least when it is dry. I haven't seen any green wood, but it is probably a lot lighter...perhaps the white one as you suggest. It must hold detail pretty well, being a favored wood for a profession here that makes small intricate and delicate wooden items.

Red Mulberry is wonderful to work.
Turns really smoothly and takes a wonderful finish.

Black Locust can be smoked with ammonia. Gives it a wonderful green colour.

What term? Smoked?

That was a mistranslation on my part, sorry.

The correct english word is fumed.
When I fume locust or any other wood, I use a glass plate as lid on the container.
That way I can stop the process when I have obtained the color I want.
Black locust starts out getting green, or greenish, then gets darker until it eventually ends up black.

Sorry if this is somewhat incoherent.
I have just painted my hottub inside, and obviously should have worn a filter.
I am stoned out of my gourd!!!!

Just bought one this morning, $535 (without bar and chain). I needed it, my backup saw is several years old and runs lean when it warms up.

What's wrong with yours and how far did you drop/throw it? :P

That sounds like fun to try. So you just put a little ammonia on the bottom. How long of a process? Have to be stronger than household ammonia?

I don't know how strong your household ammonia is, but the stuff I use will REALLY make your eyes water.
( I just went and checked the bottle: 24,5% ammonia).

If you want to fume a larger object, you can make a "tent" of plastic and keep it in that.
The old furnituremaker, who taught me thge trick built a huge table out of red oak, erected a "tent" around it and fumed it untill it looked like our brown oak, really neat trick.

Red Mulberry and White Mulberry are both hard, heavy and have yellow heartwood that photo-reacts to brown like their cousin Osage(which will continue to darken until purple-black). Paper Mulberry is a much lighter and more brittle wood.

Today was tiresome-slew an Ailanthus hazard tree this morning (it cracked and partially uprooted in yesterday's high winds). Then I pruned/tip-lightened a big Elm over an art studio and pruned a big ash over a house as the winds continued to increased. I finally packed it in at 3pm-Gusts were around 40mph.
