How'd it go today?

That's the thing. I'm not anticipating rigging on any of the laterals. They'll just be dropped. I'm thinking if I get out past midway, I can take the ends off, and the worst contact will be a fence brush. The remaining stems can then be cutoff without risk to anything. I don't think ground damage is a concern with this. Ropes I think will be for the more vertical pieces to encourage them to go where I want, cause there won't be much material for wedging.

Did a couple microclimbs today. I had a couple things I wanted to get done, and also wanted to tryout the catalon hitch. I removed a dead white pine limb I forgot last year, and removed a severely cracked maple limb that my oak had hit. I've been watching it ever since it happened, and decided nothing good would come from leaving it. It was never not going to be a removal, so I might as well take it on my terms. The catalon hitch seemed to work well. The pine I used true blue, so it's kind of hard to say. That's nothing like the usual rope I use, but the hitch worked well on the mercury, which is pretty similar to my main rope.

I removed lower limbs overhanging a carport and garden on 3 beech trees today. No higher than 40’ sling rigged some. Went 95’ on a black cherry to deadwood over the neighbors shed. The wind really picked up and I had to wait for it to die down on some cuts. Cut between the gusts! Dropped a 18” 70’ beech next to a shed. Burned the limbs and took the rounds to a neighbor. Need to go back for a couple hours for odd and ends.

I made a weeks pay in a day while having fun, exercising, enjoying the outdoors, and helping neighbors. I’m so glad my mid life crisis passion was not boating or motorcycles🤣. I’d be spending a weeks pay to enjoy those activities, especially boating.

I adjusted my first carburetor today. I’m sure I’m the only one on here who hasn’t done that yet😂. Right of passage. I bought a like new backpack blower from my boss that bogged down when throttled. Ran some Seafoam through it and got the card right (I think). There’s still some hesitation when trigger is fully depressed. Still need to use the tach to verify but now it’s blowing great.

Stars didn’t align. Was going to volunteer, but my place to stay evaporated, and costs became unmanageable. Sorry to have missed it.

Bodean said: “Hey all, Did another climb comp a couple weeks ago. I got 18th out of 35…. Super fun… though long day for about 15 minutes of climbing.

I though @pigwot was gonna be there. Met a ton of cool people… Maui is very different than the Big Island.”

Levi rescued a kitteh from a tree down in the creek draw. At dusk no less. Came back to the house with a much happier kitteh. Been up there two days in the snow and such. Levi learned why I generally dont climb snow laden trees unless I can spike it for removal.
Sun broke out today starting a long needed melt at our elevation. Tons of people still stuck inhomes with no power or propane. A lot of elderly. They'll find bodies on welfare checks in the future.
Cut part of an oak tree off Robs truck. Rigged from ground and suspended 8" limbs. Whittled. Then SRT up and cut them free after the truck pulled out. No damage as there was enough snow to cushion things. Back to work tomorrow. Again

Boss volunteered me for a tree felling job, but I don't think I want it. The woman has a reputation of being a bitch, and the tree kinda scares me...

Not a great pic cause of the zoom, but it's the one that goes horizontal. Vines all over it, and the quick glance I made of the base had that starting about chest height, but I may have mis-seen it. There's a lot there that can go really wrong. The vines are a huge wildcard. The butt of the tree could go anywhere, and stuff from above could come down from a wide area cause it's all interlinked. Hoping I don't hear anymore about it, but I'll give it a close look if I get a serious request.

A tree guy got killed a few years ago from what I think were vines. That's based on my boss' shitty unknowledgable explanation, but it makes sense. The guy was an experienced pro. I don't think it was a routine fell that went bad.

Meh, cut those damn vines and send it. 😁

It will take all the time that it takes to do everything it takes to get it down. Just because he thinks its a felling job doesn't mean it is. Might be climbing the whole tree to free it from vines, and take it down in small pieces. If it seems sketch, skip it!

People are commonly sooo clueless. Today's customer wondered if a complicated forest maple leaning hard over his garage could magically be made to fall the opposite way that it leans where a lot of trees are. Also, 4 times the pruning job were were doing today, maybe more.

A neighbor to a customer last week wanted me to "just drop" one half of a double trunk forest maple. One half, heavy, heavy leaning, is about 3' through and 100' wide, with lots of big firs to hang up in with huge wood. He said he's getting up there in age, and "doesn't trust himself". I wouldn't trust him, either.

Vines are coming down from the canopies of the tulip polars(>100') to either side. Sever the base of the tree, it'll be supported to some extent by the vines. I don't think it'll hang there, but bittersweet's tough. It could hang on enough to make the butt unpredictable. If I'm correct that it starts chest height, it doesn't put you in a good position to run like hell. Plus the 1hr+ brushcutter work to make a decent escape path.

Sean's point about climbing and cutting it free would be the most prudent, but that's *a lot* of work. The vines are more numerous, and harder to deal with than look, even standing there looking at them. Those locusts I took down last year I intended on clearing the vines then felling. I was 8' up the tree, on my second tank of fuel, and nowhere near done. I ended up setting a rope in the rear tree, facing and backcutting both trees(they both just stood there), then pulling them over with the truck.

That's not one I'd do cheap. I don't think I want to do it at all, but if I did, it would be about market rate. I'm in this for the fun, and that tree isn't fun.

Another day of earning under $300 for the company. The past 5 work days have not been productive for me. I hate that. Truly hate that. The golden child is being taken care of though (a coworker who is up the owners arse) I’m glad I still get hourly pay. It’s just terrible not being productive.

Finished the tree job from last weekend- stomp cut, blowing, and a couple pole saw cuts.

My 8 year old daughter’s hamster died this morning. We buried him in the backyard wooded area and put the stump cut as a headstone. She used a marker and wrote an epitaph on it.

My wife and daughter cried over the hamster and my sons and I did not. Interesting observation.

Bummer about the hamster. I never had good luck with them growing up. My longest lived lasted 1.5 years, and the rest died in months.

I'm pretty good with not being productive as long as my time isn't being wasted, which my boss is good for. Either work, or don't, but tell me what you're doing, cause I have better places to be than the office.
