How'd it go today?

Picked up a fun oak deadwooding job for the neighbors behind us. Little money but in my backyard and stuff stays on site.

My almost 10 yr old son was taught how to use the 18V Makita chainsaw today. He loved it. He got to buck and cut some vertical, 4-5” “stumps” that were about 5’ tall. I didn’t take pictures or videos because I was really hovering giving instructions. He also is back into the axes. Those are allowed unsupervised.

Started that safety trim for the neighbors. It was a lot worse than I thought. Fungal growth galore. It’s a 120-130’ oak. 2 yrs ago , massive amounts of masonry rubble was dumped on about 1/4 of the root zone during the house “flip”. It’s still there. Lots of the canopy is going to have to come out. I’ll get really familiar with my new pole saw as it’s too brittle to get near many sections. The tree will look pretty bad once done but at least it won’t fall on them while sitting around the bonfire or the kids are playing. I’m hoping it will live a little longer but it will probably be fully dead in 5 years.😔 I did my first coos bay cut. Worked like a dream. I also gave the lady of the house a heart attack by dropping a heavy beast right next to the playground- I knew it would fit. She thought it was a goner from her angle🤣. I let the neighbor help with the bucking (lots of large pieces) I gave him some safety gear, saw, and instructions and he went at it. He did well and really enjoyed it. He’ll have purchased a saw within a few weeks🤣.

We had one little guy on the trap team that would extend his one leg wayyyyyy back behind him and the other slightly forward. Everyone wanted to correct him. But it worked for him. He really needed that leg back there as a counter lever. Trouble is he had to reset his stance every shot. As he got older, that rear kick stand got drawn back in as he grew into the gun. Now he has that slight forward stance on the one leg slightly back on the other and keeps those feet planted through 5 rounds at each station. Leans slightly forward. Has a few buckles to him name too. Fun watching them grow.
Most the young ones go to a semi like an 1100 to help the weight and recoil issues. Then you battle followthrough. Lighter gun, easier to stop in swing.
Good on you Jim. Forever memories.
