How'd it go today?

I picked nearly 300 feckin' bagworms off a small Leyland... among other things.

can you use BtK for bagworms Blink? I wonder if it will get into the 'bags' to be effective. We have tent caterpillars here, questionable effect with them (the BtK).

I didn't work today. I'm still sick, threw up in the Home Depot parking lot this morning. Laid around most of the day and then had to do some bids this afternoon.

Durn bro hope you get to feeling mo better.

Got 3 small jobs today, should pay me what I make all week working for the man.
My boss is getting better I dont know whats happened but he's instituting my plan. First off was getting hard hats for the crew (done) which they've never had and now if I can get him to stop spikeing trims I can see a long future with them (yesterday he bought marbars) . I understand thou, I can blaze thru 5 excurrent trims by the time it takes me to set a throwball, set a rope and climb one. 5 trees vrs 1 tree. My C.A. expires in June I may not continue it. It depends if I want to go hungry and hold to my ethics or making money spikeing trims. I dont think I'll ever find a company that understands what C.A. really means. :what:
If anyone would like to challenge me vrs spikeing vrs throwballing, please come visit and bring your big shot! Whats it all mean? It dont mean nothing!
So my choices are this spike trims and make money or throwball all my trims and go hungry and not pay rent. What should I do. By the way I use two throwballs everyday mostly they are used to set rigging ropes. Working for myself I dont spike trims but those jobs are far and few between.

how ya feelin steve?
robert, practice with your throw ball and youll out climb the spikers;)

I'm a little better but not out of the woods yet. I have a must do today job today and i am trying to make it to that. This apartment complex was inspected by HUD and told to remove this tree immediately. So they didn't quibble about the price and expect it to be done today. One of my guys just went home sick so I hope I can at leasat get there and get most of it done.

Did some lower limb trimming today. I hate doing it but the guy thinks his grass is gonna grow if they are gone. Hoisted up a hung up locust tree over the cable line...winched it up, set a line to keep if from moving, tied into another tree and slowlycut it back. Got it far enough to just toss the cable line over the top and lower the spar down.

Coulda used a GRCS (that I dont have) but my good old Lug-All did the job.

Dude, maybe you missed my boat? I've got over 13 years throwballing. Yesterday I chunked it backwards over 80 feet up to set a marbar line. :what:, lets see you do that.

I dont know if your being sarcastic or not dude?

Heh Robert then why again are you spiking trims?

I'm chillin and swillin in Whistler, here's the view from my hotel room right at the base of whistler/blackcomb. And there's the pool that goes right from inside to outside the hotel, kind of cool to swim from inside to outside.

This is definetly one of the nicest hotels I've been in but man oh man, $25 for one bottle of beer :O. Ha I used to summer here in Whistler/Pemberton so I know where the government liquor store is ;).

Working for the man squish, will work for food. Something the working class have to do.
Maybe decurrent trees it'd be a close comp, but excurent trees now way. Production wise I'd smoke out 10 trees by the time you was starting to throwball your second one. Not very profitable for a production company.

My point was if you're good with a throwball (and I'm not)then your boss shouldn't mind you throwballing your trims and working spikeless no?

And everyone work's for someone Robert even if it's for your own customer's. My wife's boss is footing the bill for this long weekend hotel, because she's a exceptional performer. Also paying for her weekend of courses with fitness professionals from all over north america.

I do hear what you're saying though Robert, I logged for many years and saw my fair share of atrocities committed against nature. I've also walked on jobs/employers before because we didn't see eye to eye.

Gotta eat and keep the bill collectors away though.

Ok, so you can set a throw line. Maybe you need to tweek your climbing style a little to help you climb without spikes quicker, or meet him half way and use some short pole gaffs so there is less scaring to the tree... I dunno what to tell you dude.

I know that with my BS I can strategically choose my TIP's to my greatest climbing advantage and it's safer than flip-lining with spikes (IMO) because I can maintain a double tie in at all times, if necessary, and I can swing from lead to lead with ease enabling me access to the entire tree very efficiently.

My biggest advantage is probably my size. I'm 5'11", and 165lbs of pure muscle... not a gram of visible fat on my body. I'm not at all trying to toot my horn rather point out that being lean, strong, agile, and light-weight has tremendous advantages while aloft. I've no clue what your physique is like so I don't know where you stand there.

Anybody else agree with that line of thought?

I agree branch doc it is much safer because of course your tied in from the ground. But its isnt very productive to trim pines without spikes. Pole spikes being less harmful I disagree, spike or dont spike dont bs around trying to walk soft in the tree.
Maybe we can come to some kinda agreement especially on oaks like I said a page ago with spreading crowns certainly its more effecient.
I'm 5'9 165lbs. 5years ago i benched 300 lbs and a little more I weighd 160 then. No doubt climber your a mighty mouse and I predict youll never own a bucket truck either.
I've not timed myself on a 40 foot climb in some time. The boss paid for the whole crew to go and we watched the GAA comps. I can tell you right now I would not come in last in a comp!

It's weird, I've climbed around some heavier guys that were strong as hell and decent climbers but I've always ran circles around them every time.

I wonder if there's an "ideal climbing size/weight"? There's an interesting thread waiting to happen.

I dont know. For example I'm working with a old school climber, what I mean by old school is he makes a moneky fist and throw his rope on darn near every tree. Its simple for him he has refined the art of throwing the fist going on 8 years now. So its quicker for him to throw the fist that final 10 feet for a TIP. It works for him its his style and he's refined it to be as effecient as he can. I worked him on 4 pin oak trims last month the throwball kept fouling on th epin oaks so he starts throwing his ropes and evenutally so did I!. LOL That tells me that no matter the tree I should be able to do it anyway that is known and that there are so many different ways that mine aint always the best way. There are limits to every technique employed aloft For me there is no one way to do a tree, I have been told how to do a tree (and did it) by so many people that it took all that to find out the quickest way for me. The simplest method seems to be the safest method. I dont throwball all my removals thou I could maybe even should I know a few that do most dont, and it dont mean nothing. Whatever way I chose I make sure its a safe way other than that I'll cut a tree upside down if somebody tells me to do that way. Does it sound like I am bored of doing removals? lol It should.
I almost forgot I spent my day with the creator and owner of www.junkyards.com He's pulling 4 digits a month from google for advertising. He created the website in 1998.

I'll give you an "AMEN", Burnham. :)
I can relate to Robert's frustration because I spent many years just about where he is. Due to my father's nonsensical financial training, I never believed in myself enough to charge what I was worth. I kept trying to make something with nothing and 'save money' to try and live up to my father's wishes. I couldn't 'waste' money on expensive equipment because I was supposed to save that money, and I never had any extra to save anyway. I was about 39 when I finally realized that my income was maxxed out and my body wouldn't allow me to continue climbing at the pace I was trying to maintain. I had to do something different or starve.

So I borrowed $40K (refinanced my house) and went bucket truck shopping. I spent $30K on the truck, insurance and repairs in the first 3 months and the other $10K went to living expenses. By the end of the year I was doing better than I had done climbing. 2.5 years later I borrowed more money, bought a newer bucket truck and sold the old one. I now make in a week what I used to make in a month. I have a Roth IRA retirement account and all my bills are paid. But I had to go far in debt to get there. I took a chance on myself and it's paying off.

sarcastic? not in that post:|: i guess maybe its the climbing then? all i know is even on removals i usually set a line from the ground cause its faster than any other method. "whatever" (valley girl tone and hands in the shape of a W :D)
