How'd it go today?

I recently had the worst back spasm I've ever had, missed a lot of work, etc. I'm a little late to the party but I found that taking 2-4 200mg Advil tablets are a highly effective way to try to control back pain. I used to be a big aspirin advocate but advil seems to be significantly better.
Massage therapy?

Does wonders!

from what I understand, the thing that helps cartiledge the most is blood flow. if your not getting full motion, and circulation, blood gets stuck in the joint and corrodes cartiledge. its a self perpetuating cycle.
I dont take any supplements but ive thought about glucosamine. there is almost always some sort of carcass/veggie broth cooking away on the back of the stove or in the slow cooker. Im not sure but these broths and soups feel like they are very good for my joints.

Thats pretty much what I’m talking about Cory.

It seems, for the most part, to be an American proclivity
i think couches, immobility and poor diet is a bigger part of life over here, than in europe. we lead the world by far in knee, hip, and back surgeries. probably in ibuprofen consumption as well. this is not because we do more back breaking work.

On a separate theme, what is it with you Yanks and abstaining from little pleasures and comforts?

The more I thought about this, Mick, I would be extremely suprised if it were proved that this is a Yank ( :rockhard:) thing. I mentioned Spartans above, and hey they weren't yanks yet they started or at least popularized the whole idea. And Spartan races (those crazy obstacle course events) that are all the rage in recent years and are kind of an exercise in extreme hair shirting, started in England I believe.

I'd guess it simply a matter of 'different strokes'. Someday scientists will be able to look into a person's brain and determine, without any knowledge of the person in question, what they were into. "Oooo, look at the size of that neuron clump adjacent to the distal portion of the basal ganglia! This person definitely was into playing music, probably guitar. Oh, and over there, that tiny swelling of the anterior portion of the cerebral cortex- dead giveaway that they were Liberal and also hated spicy food."

Wow, what a superb turn this thread is in! F'g Treehouse :rockhard: :rockhard:

Stikine, can you elaborate on the use of the infrared therapy

@cory -there's quite a few articles that pop up in a quick search when you have the time. Here's one for example.

The lights are pretty cheap and you can find all sorts of them on Amazon.

i was wrong about ibuprofen consumption. looks like france and sweden consume more of it by far. socialist medicine at work maybe.

Rain today. I did dishes... I also changed my computer desktop. Time for the shitty desktops. I generally make it seasonal, and tend to favor nature settings. Warm weather sucks, so here's an early spring desktop. Looks about right, eh? I'm keeping the animated falling snow for the time being, but that'll be gone soon :^(

KB, what things do you do that 'help build cartilage'? Do you take supplements?

Excellent observation, imo-

I know I am not KB but I have used GLC2000 in the past. One of the only Glucosamine products on the market with all 4 bioavailable Glucosamines.

I used it years ago to help with a damaged shoulder. A mate shipped some to me in Norway when I dislocated my shoulder in 2019.

Just checked and the tub is still half full. I should get back on them to help fix the other shoulder, knee, and back after eating shit on a rail in the park whilst snowboarding on Friday.

I should really act my age sometimes.

this is not because we do more back breaking work.

The average worker in the us works far more hours than they do in Europe. "Backbreaking" or not spending more hours standing, hunched over a computer, or even dragging brush wears on a body, and when lack of sleep, stress, and everything else comes into play Americans would definitely wear themselves out more.

@kevin bingham We transformed our living room into a LIVING room...took out the sofas, TV, got a good yoga mat. I do my training at home now instead of going to the gym:

This is my daily goto routine, usually each morning...takes about 20 minutes, can be done quicker if necessary. I take a hot shower first most of the time...gets a few kinks out. This helps keep my back et al loosened up.

I made this video for a friend that wanted to add this type of yoga to his training. I have a different quick set of "anchored" yoga that uses an anchored rope to do a whole-body 5 minute stretch when time is of the essence. But I ALWAYS do stretch before doing things strenuous.

hahaha....my wife ordered one last week! It's a 4 holer, I think. She got fired up and put down a deposit...10 weeks delivery. Gonna be sweatin' here soon.... :D

i threw out my back a few years ago and ate more ibuprofen then was proper 1000 mgs at one pop out of desperation and as a result got an incredible case of tinnitus that lasted a few weeks. felt like an alarm going off in my head. I had no tolerance built up so 1000 mgs hit me hard. its a common documented side effect of overdose and can sometimes be permanent and can sometime cause total hearing loss. ibuprofen also decays your cartiledge. ive stayed clear of the stuff since then. scared of it.
I don't touch the stuff... no pain relievers of any kind. I'd rather feel the pain and let it guide me to an appropriate healing modality. I'm going to the stem cell doc on March 2. And I just bought real health insurance in case I need the total hip replacement. I've got it stabilized now. On day 4 of a smoothie fast. Pissed out 5 lbs of water on day 2. Going to stay as anti-inflammatory as possible with the diet until this thing gets resolved.

ps great video gary. You;re operating at a high level. please don't act so shy with sharing your videos. That sword form is amazing!

That's a hella routine, Gary. I feel a bit looser having watched!

I'd love to see the anchored rope routine simply from the standpoint of 'time is of the essence'

Rained out yesterday. Ended up doing kegs and eggs with a few of the guys before going to the arb store. Always a good time but it was better than normal. I hung out with Matt Cornell for a few hours. Not the first time amd won’t be the last. Matt is a good dude. Ended yesterday drinking beers by a fire with some friends. Today was pretty good as well. Lattes all day

Off to a roaring start. Heard rain, so I rolled over and went to sleep again. I'm supposed to lay out shoring piles, and mark boltholes on a pier, but if I play my cards right, I can get out of doing the pier for awhile. In absolute terms, I can do it, but it's a real PITA when it's freshly poured, and still formed up. I'd like to postpone it for at least a week. They aren't gonna need it for awhile anyway. They still haven't driven pile on the other abutment. I do want to get the shoring pile done, cause I have somewhere else to be tomorrow. Looks like the rain will chillout sometime after 9 or 10, and I can get it done.

I agree on the glucosamine supplement. It is one of the few supplements where it seems I can really tell a difference...when I lay off some joint aches resurface. The fellow that put me onto it was adamant..it needs to be the sulfate version...smaller molecular size is better assimilated. I take this version:

it has chondroitin and sulfate...plus MSM...good for joints, too.

Holy hell what a mudhole today. Got the pile laidout, but didn't do the pier. Windy as hell outside. Seems to always do that. When the ground can't take an ounce more water, the wind turns up to 11 to uproot trees :^/
