How'd it go today?

Three goats went to auction today and the herd needs one more momma and baby gone for down sizing. So one buck, one doe with doe kidd attached. The momma was not that great a momma or milker so she had to go. Billy goat was an alpine. He was kinda a PITA so he got to go to dinner somewhere. Made for a hectic morning.
Had a gift card from Christmas for Home Depot so I bought some planking for the flat bed trailer. She'll be off to the welder here soon. Going to let the planking float and just secure it under iron on the ends. I want one end to bolt down so no cutting will be needed come time for new planks.
Can't wait to get that little project buttoned up. I am going to miss being able to lash logs or poles down on that frame though. Just have to do it a tad different is all ;)
Had another goat kid out twins yesterday.. One more is due. Busy time of yeah for G&C Farm.

Cograts on the twins! Observing momma goat eating up that very unappetizing looking placenta, sure does inform how nature is often a wonderful thing.

Orrrrrrrrrr something Kat can witness... Bleagh... I go back in the house.....
Cute little buggers though.
The one that went with her mom to auction would follow me around like a little puppy and want to be held all the time. Sweet little girl.

Home sick today. Large oak gets a stay of execution. Customer was nice about it, but I happen to know he's very type A. Not a single blade of grass out of place at his house. I have no idea why he likes me. Maybe because when I first worked for him he checked every legal detail there was on me and I came up clean. What he doesn't know is that staying legit for me is like jumping from one slippery rock to the next and always feeling like a barely made it. I was up a lot last night with inconsolable 10 month old baby girl (Liberty). She keeps pulling at her ear. Sad.

Beautiful pic man.

Day off? Do you work seven days a week or just happened to schedule a Sunday specially for a customer?

I do my best to not work weekends.

Hope you and your little girl get some rest today.

Hope you get her ear sorted out in good order. Ear infections just are awful. Poor little hing just does not understand why she hurts and why can't momma an dad make it go away.
Get well soon Liberty.

As a father of three, it's been my experience a thermometer in good working order is a parent's best friend, particularly newborn's in their first few years.

You can do it August.

Tools of the parenthood trade.

I still remember having earaches when a kid. They were bad news. Hope she mends quick.

I guess that is what those personal investigative sites are for, checking up on criminal records of tree guys. It wasn't for much, disturbing a bunch of Boy Scouts, but I got my papers sealed! :)

According to my folks I never needed the thermometer when i was growing up. My older sister on the other hand got the thermometer all the time, must be something different with the second child!

Speaking of twins, we just got our third set in the cows. Lost one of the twins a couple of days ago, the mother was not very good at her job and it froze, luckily we got there in time and saved the other one.

Twins are kind of a PITA in cattle, but it is nice to have an extra calf lying around if you loose one and want to graft it onto the cow.

Day old baby calves are going for 600 dollars right now. We used to pay 50 to 100 dollars.

Played with the skidder. Loaded up some lumber that is headed to a little job I'm working on over in NY. Thought about starting the sawmill. Didn't. Took a nap instead.:)

One of my many interests is collecting reference books .Today I landed a copy of the"steel construction " manual published by The American Institute of Steel Construction .Flea bay under 10 bucks free shipping .Might not sound much to average person but it contains a wealth of info .1970 version but things don't change much .The latest copy is over 400 bucks .

Some times cattle or sheep loose the calf or lamb as be the case .Some times you can get the female to "adopt " an orphaned or twin or triplet lamb or calf .In some cases with a young ewe or cow she will reject the off spring .If another female doesn't adopt it you have two choices .Bottle feed it or it starves to death .

Yeah, transplanting a calf onto a cow that lost hers is called grafting. Possibly the term originated from the practice of skinning the dead calf and tying the skin onto the live calf with out a mother. The Mother cow smells her calf (the skin) on the new calf and all is well with the world, sometimes! Doesn't always work. Sometimes a cow will need to be placed in a head catch for a couple of days so the adopted calf can nurse her with out the cow trying to kick the calf. In a couple of days the milk passes through the new calf and she might claim it then.

I bottle fed an orphaned runt twin for my neighbor time to time while they traveled. He's a big steer these days. The calf caused a subdivision of the jack russell terrorist's 10x10 steel kennel to keep the coyotes at bay. There was one of those head trap things for feeding. A calf can take down a lotta milk, fast!

I've fed calves ,lambs ,once a piglet from a bottle .Actually a calf gets a bucket with a rubber nipple about the size of a cucumber .

Now today coming home from work was a flock of turkeys in the road .I slowed down and changed lanes to avoid them .Then the dumb azzes started chasing me like a bunch of hoodlums .They must be nutz .What can you expect from a 25 pound bird with a brain the size of a pea .
