How'd it go today?

Stig, why is the logging season only in the colder part of the year? Here the logs fetch a better price generally, due to the lesser water content. Is that why?

Ever tried logging decidous trees in the summer?

It sucks, big time!

In my pulp days, we killed conifers all summer, but that is all done by mechanical harvesters now.

And the frozen ground is a nice thing as well.

I hate dropping a big hardwood on soft ground, and having to sharpen for every 5 cuts I make, because the log is half buried.

The local mill, that takes most of the beech logs we fall is vacuum drying the wood, so they don't care about moisture content, much.
Sometimes if they run out of wood, we'll do a summer run, but I'd rather avoid it.

Maybe it is Beech in particular, with the long straight stem that is more problematical to cut in the warm months with the dirt element? Dirt in the bark seems like it is as big a factor as dirt on the ground. I have hit dirt on the ground a time or two, though. :|: Obviously you have the experience to know the ins and outs, but it doesn't seem that problematical to toss a limb under to keep things mostly off the ground, before whacking the limbs. Perhaps the mills don't like the extra chance that logs will pick up dirt either? Working in warmer weather just seems like it has big comfort advantages. I must be soft.

Took apart a big sugar maple and a hickory beside it. Nothing worth bragging about. Another day of work. Got on the processor at 2 and made a few cords of wood.

While going from one job to check out another, I came across this sign (pic below). I'm not sure it has a connotation that is conducive to new business ...:lol::lol:

Me either.

Had a good paying job today, removal of two small pines and a large umbrella tree but it didn't go as planned. Wasps.

Don't know where the nest was, I couldn't see it but they got me. Paper wasps, only small but they sting like hell. I haven't been bitten for years must be the weather.

No sleep tonight again I reckon. I look like that funny arm wrestler, one arm and one leg twice as big as the other and I still don't know what bit me on monday that's still itchy as hell.:shaking:

Screwed up on a bid and had to take it like a man today. I'll make it up through the rest of the week. When I realize part way into a job that my number was off, it sours my mood. I started the day exhausted and tired so I think that played into it.

I gave a bid today, the guy says "Whoa, I thought it was going to be about $1200". I told him $750, I beat myself up the whole ride home. Ive been having a mind set lately of "whatever". That one customer will tell two people, who will tell another two people, and so on. So I try to think, you really didn't "lose" a dollar. You'll just have one bad day. :|:

I worked at a condo association today, boring as hell.

Tough it out, it makes you a better bidder on the next one.

Easy day today, 25 palms to trim and that was it. Then I called tomorrow's job to get an address and found out that they never pulled the permit so I'm idle again tomorrow.

Probably a good thing since I severely aggravated my rotator cuff last Saturday. I think the original tear/ injury was last year while recovering from the bicep tendon surgery. I was using my right arm more in order to favor my left arm and eventually overdid it. Now I can barely hold a saw in my right hand at arm's length, it's making me two hand the saw all the time so it's slowing me down. Hopefully I can get through a few more months and then get the surgery in June or July. That would put my recovery in the hottest, most miserable time of the year so that would be a good time to be out of work.

Finished up the job I screwed the bid up on this morning, only by a grand. I'm with Brendon these days, whatever it will come around. Then pruned a decent size Red Oak for an old friend. That turned into removing 10 Pines tomorrow, so I guess whatever worked this time.

Sorry to hear you going through that Brian. I hope you do ok until you can get it worked on.

Maintenance prune on something like 40 - 50 trees today we had lifted over the last couple years. Two guys with poles saws can sure make a mess  At least we were able to just pile it off to the side. HO has taken to like burning little piles instead of chipping :D All that little epicormic growth is a bit harsh to feed into the mulching hopper on our chipper.

Then I had a little bit of the day left to finish a mistletoe removal across the street. Good day :D

My little chipper has two chutes. One is a disc chipper and the other is a flail knife cage. It mulches up to 3/4 inch. Two guys can feed it at one time. One chipping, one mulching. Hand fed though and only chips up to 5 inch. Quite portable however.

Good sized oak Nick

Thats a 460 with a 25" bar, new last year. I got those dogs off of ebay. The outside one is always rattling loose and I noticed today it is warped a little bit. To be honest they are probably too big but they are still superior to the stock dogs that came with it.

Those same dogs are always for sale on ebay.

My handle is the flush cut, I really want a 3/4 wrap handle, do you like yours?

If anyone has a 3/4 handle for sale...
