How'd it go today?

This morning I got to put a pretty big dead oak on the ground. About 36" dbh and about 75' tall. I had a little room and had it brushed out in about 30 minutes. Flopped the last 35' of stem, made the stump cut, chatted and goofed off and still rolled off the job less than 90 minutes after showing up. I ended up getting two other calls today, both for minor stuff and ended the day with a nice little wad of cash in my pocket.

The temple job went ok, nothing broken! The decision was made to remove the top, and if sound wood remained, go for the flop. Pretty wobbly tree from the get go, and found a very brittle top and a hole after the first cut. Two more short sections down and the wood became sound, so ended up with enough weight off and the crane snuggled up close to just crane it out. Three and a half tons for the pick, a bit less than expected. Easy peasy really, a 275 year old tree. Falling the tree would have been fun, but played it safe and no surprises. More pooped than usual, the cold didn't help. I made a vid, hope to post it after some editing. Thanks for the support and encouragement on this job, much appreciated! It was definitely a good study for me.

Got rained out today, so I ran some errands for Dad the first half of the day. Second half Dad and I took the VW GTI I've been looking at to a place here in town to have it inspected. Great place, did a full and through inspection on it, and explained it all to us and we got some quotes for some work that needs to be done on it. After a week of thinking and research and the inspection I decided to pull the trigger on it, going back after work tomorrow to fill out paper work and take her home. Was able to knock the price down to $12900, from $14,800, blue book value is $14900 roughly, so a good deal I think. The mechanic at the shop today said as long as I take care of it and do all the correct maintenance I should have no problem getting 220k+ miles out of it. It has 89k at the moment.

Good luck w/the new-to-you car Adrian. Hope she treats ya well!

Scheduled a walk through on a job for Thursday, and delivery of BMG and 38 Special for tomorrow morning:).

Checked on the combo ball/pintal hitch I ordered at the local camper supply place and talked some with one of the guys who work there. One is in the pool business and needs tree work done fairly often so I gave him a couple cards.

One of the musicians I have been collaborating with on the .net wrote me a note to tell me a fledgling internet radio station has chosen one of the songs we worked on together for airplay and he needed my permission. Heck yeah, why not. the song is Red Haired Boy and can be found on Kompoz.com for any interested...

I knocked out some maintenance the last couple days.

Chipper oil, fuel filter. Chip truck oil, fuel filter, fuel drain valve, alternator. White truck oil, fuel filter. New decals on chipper. And a whole bunch of other shit!

Sold a cord of wood today too, woo!

I thought about dragging out the chipper and throwing a good wash and wax on her. We still have salt on the roads so I'll wait a while still, until some washes off. :)

I am slacking on my new truck too. I haven't even vacuumed it since I got it. Or wax! Damn, happy home ownership I guess.

I've been a Nazi about rinsing my vehicles this winter. I've seen too many quality vehicles rot away while they still had years of service left in them. I'm so tired of replacing brake lines that the salt eats through.
