It definitely works better, and I contend it works better whether you have a stairway in the mix or not.

Al, Scott and I are advocating the same thing you are, i.e., move the hot air down from the ceiling to the floor. But doing it your way creates a cooling effect on people from "wind chill" and leaves the outer edges of the room unaffected by the transfer of warm air down, so you get no evening out of the available heat over the full interior space.

The owners manual that came with my Casablanca ceiling fan back in 1988 goes into great detail on the proper use of reversing fan direction, with some diagrams and discussion. I'll see if I can find it.

I stand corrected .I looked it up on Hunter fans and they say exactly as you folks not as I .

On the subject though they make a heavy duty fan mounting box that while it costs more is a much safer way to hang a fan .Also don't forget to use a safety wire on these things .They could hurt you should they come down out of the ceiling like a helicopter .Don't trust the #8-32 screws on a standard 4" square junction box to support a ceiling fan .

Mine are "Harbor Breeze" fans from Lowe's...not near as heavy as a Hunter. If I had Hunters, I'd definitely go for the cable.
