Handrail arrived today.
Should make it marginally safer.

That open side still would give me pause. And still would not meet building codes here, not that that means you should give a rat's azz for that consideration :D.

I fell down some stairs when I was about 20. I ate a magic brownie. Never did figure out how I fell, just laid there awhile no pain :)

Run a stiff cable under it...with a descender you can clip into...saves passing the railing anchors.
Also needs a crash mat against the wall at the bottom, disguise it as art.

He's a man with three cracks in his skull, a broken jaw, a broken arm, and most of the fingers on one hand that are still dead to touch :|:.

That should be cause enough for any of us big dogs to consider just how fragile we really are :/:.

But I know you're just getting in a ribbin', Brian. I have done so, too. Stig deserves it, right? No worries :D.

That is what I love about this place.
Accidentally try to kill yourself and there is no mercy from anybody.

Jim got the best shot in: " At least I guess vegetables are easy to puree!"

I still laugh about that one.

I've started working, somewhat.
Still have no feeling in my first 3 fingers on my right hand.

Yesterday I ran a saw for the first time.
Was dropping a small tree with a slice cut head high, to make it drop enough to slip under some power lines before falling.
As I was making the cut, the saw stopped pulling and just idled.
Since it was the apprentices saw, I figured he hadn't gassed it up.
Nope, turned out my finger had slipped off the gas thingie without me noticing.

Weird!

Sure.
They are still slightly swollen, so I can't make a fist. ( That is why that shoulder tap/death thing would have been fine)
I'm getting the strenght back in them slowly and first week of August I'm sceduled for another session where they send electricity through the nerves.
Then we'll see if it looks better than last time and they'll decide whether to bring the scalpel out or not.

I'm even clumsier than usual with that hand.

Yesterday I was making a dressing for cowboy caviar.

Just as I opened the tap on the olive oil container with my left hand, I at the same time swept the plastic bowl aside with my dead fingers.
Olive oil all over the table top.

You should see me tying my shoe laces.
A blind Thalidomid sufferer could do it faster.

But hell, the dog and I are back in the woods :)

Do I spot a nicely turned burl knob on the top of the newel post?

Missed that one, sorry.

Yep, the whole bannister/ balustrade is made by me.
I made the stair case, balustrade and all wooden trim around the windows upstairs out of a single elm log.
Gives it a nice uniform look.
The knob is elm burl, but from a different tree.
