How'd it go today?

Our stihl dealer has an automated sharpener. It does ok. Probably would do better but they most likely don’t inspect each chain to see if it needs another pass. I only have them sharpen when I have longer loops that have been rocked

Not that it matters a whole lot, or there is much to be done about it, but that video was actually posted by a copycat account. The girl pictured on the account is Piper, chiselbit's apprentice. The guy in the video is Top Branch Tree co. The way to tell is legit accounts have a blue asterisk after their name.

my stihl dealer charges something like $5 for chains under 20" and $8 for chains over 20" I think

I believe I know where the .404 off the 881 is going any time it needs sharpened, I hate filing that thing

≤16" I enjoy the break filing on site. 20" is fine, especially if I'm not constantly sharpening. 24" I'm starting to get annoyed. 36", and it's "FFS!", and it tends to be a little sloppy. I sharpen it well enough to get chips, but I'm not putting much time into it.

IMG_5959.jpeg IMG_5960.jpeg We have a contract for removing scotch broom from one of the big open space parks in town. They want them pulled out manually, no mowing. I made this to do it. I modeled it after a pretty common nail pulling tool. The tool is basically a big pliers with one short handle. The foot on the short handle sits on the ground and pulling the long handle clamps the jaw on the stem and levers the plant up and out. Tried it out on a few and looks like it works great. This week we take it out and give it an all day test hopefully.

There was a commercially made tool just like that for just that purpose, back a few decades. Maybe still available, I don't know. If memory serves, it went by the name "weed wrench" or some such.

It was specified for use on some roadside invasives removal contracts the USFS let in the 90's, maybe? Scotch broom specifically. I bet it'll work a treat, @Porkbrick. They did then, though it was surely labor intensive.

Roots are deep, John. Quite woody in the thicker parts. Can get wide in good soils.

Google found this...

Nice find! I see it works with a different grabbing mechanism. This is what I based my design on:nail extractor tool at DuckDuckGo - https://duckduckgo.com/?q=nail+extractor+tool&t=iphone&iax=images&ia=images&iai=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.faithfulltools.com%2Fimages%2Fxxlarge%2FFAINAILPULL_B.jpg

How much time does it take to extract a plant? Say from the moment you clamp it til it's out of the ground.

One or two seconds. Pretty quick. Of course there’s always going to be dependent on factors like soil, moisture, and average size and density of the plants being pulled. I’m guessing that moving from plant to plant and piling/hauling them will eat a lot of time.

Well here's an unusual post-

Billabong appears to be going out of business and they have a 60% off site wide sale. I previously bought some of their shorts and they are the best I've ever owned- very functional, very well made and long lasting.

So here's a link should there be interest.

So I get a call for a repeat custy and he tells me he is ready to take down the big dead oak and a few smaller cherries. Get it down and then tells me it’s only been dead for three years. I’ve been doing his work for seven years and it was dead when I got there. Again a wooded lot and no targets so out of sight out of mind, but damn to be that far off in your mental time line. That’s like a decade missing in your noodle.

Maybe only three years since he noticed. Oaks hold up pretty well for awhile, so if you aren't paying attention, neighboring greenery can make it look better in season, and off season, it doesn't have leaves anyway.

I have a hard time remembering when things happened. I tend to lump things in large blocks. A lot of things happened when I was 6, 12, 25, and "a few years ago". "A few years ago" is getting particularly bad. Time goes by faster than I notice. I'll think something happened a couple years ago, and pull out my phone to look for photos, and it was actually four or five years ago :^/
