How'd it go today?

Told the boss yesterday morning that after this week I’m going to a four day work week. He said he will make that work. Tomorrow now we have a meeting plus his wife and brother (the other owners) and a few of the other “important people”. I’m not so sure he understood me when I said it’s non-negotiable. We will find out tomorrow I guess. I’ve got a dozen easy spruce to strip out by noon while Jimmy handles the rest. I’m doing the ones that are within range of the primaries while he does the safe ones. Gonna make a hell of a mess but I want things safe in case our meeting turns sour. Gotta look after my boys.

Good job dazzling the homeowners, Stephen.

Good to look after the boys, Rich.

Something to consider, how much would make that negotiable. Having a number ready to go, like $10K, $20k, 30K more will show you what your worth to them. Would all the stake holders effectively kick down $5K per to keep you killing it, especially with the crane work? Keeping you from drifting out overall, not just that one day a week. They have got to know you're edging out.

When I quit, the wheels were turning for, and after quit I could have come back for, a $15K raise. It was way too dangerous...so no.

Wheels are turning but honestly this is non-negotiable. I need some time away from them. They get one less day a week or none at all. I can deal with less money. I can’t get time back. Cutting my daily hours hurts my whole crew. One day a week less and they can either finish a job or take an easier one for Friday. Also I want to salvage what’s left of a 25 year friendship. Things are getting close to a blow up that won’t be beneficial to anyone. If I explode, I have to compete against him. If we keep it friendly, I can still be an asset and also use him as one. It’s all business which is nothing but a game.
Also my day away from them is not going to be another day for me to do my thing. It’s a day to spend time at the house with the family.

Do what you gotta do!!!

Rich, I'm working 4 10s atm, it's pretty nice... a buddy is working 7 12s+ for the next 5 months or so, and i heard that we might be going to 5 or 6 10s+.... sometimes you need to scale back to save your sanity, especially when work isn't going as planned

It seems to me Rich that this is a bit like a marriage break up, you can do the whole ?we are still friends? stuff and try to scale it down.

But sooner or later you will leave completely and do your own thing (iirc you?ve been buying plant)

They?ll get pissed off because they?re busy and Friday is a no go, and/or you?ll start accumulating your own work and end up (to their eyes and maybe in fact) being less committed to their business.

Just my take from the outside, maybe way off.

I planted 500 beech trees today, then we went and took out a hazard tree for the State forest.

Yesterday was my first day of planting, did 500 then went home.
No reason to over do it.

My wrist is starting to feel like it is a working part of me again:)

Well no meeting today. Apparently one of the big names had other things to do. Not helping the cause that’s for sure.
Oh well, my last Friday went good. We got our spruce trees done and the property owner added 2-3 more days to the job. More spruce to remove plus deadwood on the entire woods line over the lawn.

This is good news, my friend. Agreed, no reason at all...tree planting is harder work than most would appreciate until they have tried it a few hundred times :). Ease into it.

Tried to stump grind Friday. Hub on the main bearing is walking away on the shaft, also the grinding wheel drive belt is dry rotting and cracking. Time to replace both parts early next week so we don't fall far behind on stumps (already have 3 customers in the queue). Somewhat dreading the two pines that that are carpeted with poison ivy all around the stump, but so far after the takedown Thursday I only have one tiny dot of it on my arm. Grime Boss wipes save the day again!

Your boss should be charging a PI premium, and passing it along, some. The problem is when it gets past, by getting on 'something' and recurring. Charging gear cleaning fees for PI jobs is also reasonable, IMO.

We have some poison oak on banks. I don't like bank work for that reason. Hanging way up in a tree that is undercut, with a drop-off below is interesting. Wouldn't do it in a storm, but otherwise, no worries. Sure helps to be good with a throwline, as some sweep way out from the bank with big butts for their size.

I hate urishiol (sp?).

I took a nap today. When I nap during the day, I neeeed it. Did some weeding and mowing at home.

Bob/ BStewart from Portland stopped by on his way through...had a nice visit. He needed to get going before it got too late, so a quick one.

Our estimator rolled by and looked at the job originally a few weeks back before ivy was leafing out here, so it wasn't noticed. Plus, given that it was in suburbia in a kept lawn, you never would've expected PI in this location, plus it's all the more odd that the pine needles didn't acidify the soil too much for the PI's liking. Anyway, we may add a bit for the PI on the stump grinding, or else run by tomorrow and hit it with some Roundup before we come back and grind in a few days.

Last year we bid a job and came out to do it -- same scenario. It had been bid a month or more earlier before the ivy leafed out, then it was apparent when we got to the job. We weren't going to touch it without a big premium added, so we just walked away. Mid-June or July we weren't hurting for work! We could've done it over winter at the same price point if they would've been able to wait, or if they could spray it for us and take the 1-2 week delay till the ivy was gone.

Its an original 1974 Ruger M77 in .220 Swift. The barrel is 26 inches.

I believe it has a similar vintage Weaver K-10 scope too.

He bought it from a shop in Virginia. Fellow used it on wood chucks.

One day Grandpa and I were visiting his friend. He had a Ruger .220 Swift in the gun cabinet.

I was probably 6 or 7 and was not allowed to hold the rifle.....so I stared at it for a long time.

Always wanted one. My friend knew that and after years of looking he bought one for me.

He would not take any money for it.....said that would take the fun out of it!
