After beeing a hedge trimmer for 3 weeks, I finally got to play logger today.
Got a distress call yesterday from a harvester guy who was clearcutting spruce and ran into a lot of blowdown, he couldn't handle because the ground was too boggy for him to manuever properly.
So I grabbed the 661 and a 30" bar and headed for the woods this morning.
Holy Moly!
Those trees had grown on top of the bog. No downwards roots whatsoever.
They had fallen in clumps of 2-4 trees and the rootplates were up to 7-8 feet tall.
With no dirt on the underside, a lot of them didn't fall when I cut the trees loose. Or they waited till one fell and went like dominoes.
Cutting one like that, you really have to watch where your cut closes. On top and the root plate will likely fall on you when the tree drops. That size, and it is all she wrote.
With several trees uprooted in clumps, one has to stand on the bottom ones while bucking the top ones free. Gotta be sure which way they are going to swing, since getting away is tricky when balancing on a log.
I had a bit too much excitement on that job, but after all the hedges it sure was nice to breathe some forest air again.
Now I'm back to the hedges for another 2 weeks most likely, but at least they are keeping me out of the waterways this year.
