How'd it go today?

RQ8, is that a figure 8 of some sort? Google didn't reveal.

Rescue figure 8, has 'ears', unlike a standard "deaf" eight.

I don't know the other uses, like locking off or additional friction, but the ears can help the eight from inadvertently becoming girth-hitched on the rope. A fluky, uncommon thing to have happen. Probably more likely in a rescue, where you have compounding factors.

Awesome gig Stig..

Yeah Mick ... That is it exactly.... 54 now so shit like this going on with my health has me sweating it a bit. Scary with kids in tow.
I am considering a Forestry cert. It is possibly going to become more a mandatory piece of paper for removing all this beetle kill around here. They want us to permit everything. Then log it to help the HOs out. Oh well.

Back in the saddle Monday and feel it out Clients all have a heads up about delays that may happen to scheduling. Booked almost to June now. Having this hit now is a tad inconvenient for all concerned.

Fun job Stig, I really like those ones where we are helping research or culling invasives...very satisfying altogether.

Health issues...I hear you, so annoying when it impacts work, even the time off to go to the Dr.!

Stephen, with all that work on the books why don't you hire some help to knock it out?

I've tried. I have one groundie trainee and I doubt that will work out.
Please note signature at the bottom of post.
The only climbers I can get, I don't even want to go there.
I am going to try and talk Dave into coming out for a visit.
Mike Martella is trying to buy a house or he would be working for me now. He can't switch jobs until he lands a home.

I hear ya. But a huge backlog is certainly key in getting high quality help, imo

My mistake, Cory.
It is of course called the RQ3.
Glad Burnham sorted that out.
He is the one who turned me on to it in the first place, back when I was going to Cali to climb the big trees first time.
It helps a lot in those situations where you start on a super long rappell and the weight of the rope below you keeps you going slow, then as you descends, you go faster and faster and faster.....................*
I once managed to put myself into a near free fall going down a tall maple after coolecting sedds, only came out of that one ok by burning the heck out of my hand.
With the RQ3 you just take a quick turn around an "ear" to slow down.
It does all a Petzl Piranha does, but doesn't wear out so damned fast and is easier to work with IMO.

Yowsa! Looks fast Page.

I guess spring is getting close. I heard a robin yesterday, bastard woke me up in fact. That means the meadowlarks are only two weeks away.:)

While we were sitting next to the fire last night a muskrat swam by, and then we heard a frog! Not sure what kind it was, Boreal Chorus Frog or maybe a Leopard frog.

Calving is going good, and I have been doing a bunch of electrical work in between pulling calves. Determined to lessen the electrocution hazzard around here.

Down five pounds for the week too. (Probably used up all my good luck now.)

Got it a bit wrong today, working in a courtyard in the old town of Angouleme for an apartment block, anyway at lunchtime this guy (a resident) comes in and was a little aggressive, saying that we'd cut down healthy trees, usual bullshit, I got a bit lairy right back and it ended nastily.
He stalked off and one of my groundies said "you should have stayed calm, just said you're following the specs and left it at that" he was right.
I caught the guy on the way out apologised, he was ok with that.

Easy to do and hard to avoid, Mick. Good move to smooth things over afterwards...takes a mature approach to fix getting crosswise with someone.

Orrrrrrrr...
