Because he is using a pushing chain, top of the bar, which ejects chip better, less chance of it binding.
Hooks/dogs are useless when using the top of the bar.

The way the tree slid backwards off the stump- perhaps that happens with every no-face felling cut, even if the top isn't being deflected by surrounding trees.

I think that is very likely. It goes to the lean, the butt gets pushed the opposite direction by gravity, and there is nothing to keep it on the stump. It has to kick backwards.

The tip advances the cut since that's the direction the bar gets pushed when the tip is cutting.

to add... you may (likely will) cut off part of a hinge, all of a hinge, part of two hinges, all of a hinge.

IDK which if any face-cut type might work best. If I was trying get the most, (currently sitting in the recliner) I would consider a full-gap face, with the caveat---beware spiral grain.

I screwed it up. I figured the more the merrier but in hindsight, 5 is too wide/thick/rigid. Also extra brittle wood. Pics and vids to follow. Had a pretty good lab session yesterday.
