He must have been kidding about bad cuts in the first heli pad vid, that guy was cutting smooth as silk.

True dat!

I wasn't clear on why, in the single stem heli logging vid, they were topping those trees out first (but it sure was great footage). For more room/less damage when dropping the stem? Or for picking the stem with a heli?

QUOTE]

for picking them...the helo can only handle so much weight. They measure the bottom and top diameter, which tell them where to cut, or if the helo can handle the weight.

Did you notice the guy making the two kerf cuts with the stick for reference? That was to help him leave the precise amount of holding wood, to keep the tree standing til the chopper comes and grabs it. They also set some flagging near by to guide the pilot in the direction to come into the tree---perpendicular to the kerf cut.

Amazing country, very steep ground, snowy, fly in, right of way, tall trees...this is serious falling.

If you go to the link you can watch in HD, it's worth it. This vid delivers.

I should put it in my site...

"And THIS is why you should quit being so f***ing cheap and hire a pro!"

Kodak moment for sure. Video cameras have really captured the moments of modern living. When you stop to think just how many people have them today all the recording that's going on.

Great vid, Gord!!

That tree appeared to be leaning toward the house, and had a big limb coming off in that direction too. Good that nobody was sitting on the porch. :\:

Some footage from today whilst working for Pete (18+ stoner). We had a fair few trees to drop, and i managed to cobble this together.

For some reason youtube did not get the audio sound track, but Pete says it's best when you play Take That whilst watching, (his favorite) but i haven't the balls to try it:\:

p.s. go easy folks, never edited before

A short clip of a hangup that a property owner made. Same guy that made the stumps in the 'worst stumps you've ever seen' thread I posted. I had cut off a bunch of 'posts' before it hung into this smaller snag on the far side of the bigger tree.

This is the first time I've been able to see these vids...hotel wireless is nice...no blocks like my FS corporate system.

I don't see what Brett was seeing in the helipad felling vid...no poor faces and backcuts that I could pick up. It appears I'm not alone...Brett, share brother, could you?

The dutchman African has got to have the dullest chain on that continent. Looked like an 090 to me too.

Some fine timber coming out under those helibirds...topping out the lower value portion of the stem is the only way that harvest method can pay. Seems a shame, though. On my forest we'd never go that route due to the wasted volume.

Love the porch sacrificed to unskilled layman homeowner. Lesson learned, one would hope. Bet he didn't get any lovin' that night..."oooh, baby, you are so masculine and competent with that nasty ol' chainsaw"...NOT!
:D

Now this was interesting:O
Video Title is misleading
