I often cut high just for comfort and leg room to move out into the safe zone. Also ... we have to leave the stumps high for equipment removal at times. They need the stump high for a Back hoe, escavator or dozer to remove them.. And sometimes to use for a tie in for extraction. When the stumps are to be a ground level, I just make one or two more cuts as it will be fire wood anyway for the owner of the property. Now if was to be harvested for lumber, yeah have to cut low.
And the helicopter pads makes sense. Never seen that done here.

It cracks me up when people leave stumps higher so equipment can remove them. A sign of a lazy or inexperienced operator in my opinion. The contractors I've cleared for want stumps low. It's easier for them to dig out the backside and less stump volume to pay for at the stump dump.

I just do as they ask... LOL A lot of operators have the articulated bucket or thumb and I guess they like the leverage. We don't dump stumps, we burn them.

I've had many a trackhoe operator tell me to leave them 8 to 10 feet tall.

I have high stumped trees before, and then ALAP'd them after fallin'. Bein' tall like I am it is more comfortable for me to cut at a higher level on the stump.
After the spar is on the ground... then I break out the wedges to support the weight of the stump as the saw goes through. So it doesn't pinch the bar in the kerf. Nice flat stump...

AMEN!!!! It's a lot easier for me to drop it high and be able to get out of the way, then come back and ALAP it later!
It's a long haul for me to go from my knees to walking away, 10 years ago................................

Gord, those are awesome vids from Vancouver Isle and BC. Are those current, is there still now alot of large old growth logging going on?
I wasn't clear on why, in the single stem heli logging vid,they were topping those trees out first (but it sure was great footage). For more room/less damage when dropping the stem? Or for picking the stem with a heli?
And those climbers didn't appear to have a climb line, do they spur up, top it and spur down? Seems like a rope would save alot of energy.

What is the reason for dropping trees in their situation? I don't know anything about fighting forest fires.

Cutting a fire line... Drop the fuel.
Also note the stump smoking... They get hot embers in them and will burn, so you drop those fur sure. Or they spread the fire higher up in the canopy.
