I used to have lots of ferals around here. All but two disappeared; both catch & released. I particularly miss Fathead and Mom. Fathead was a scrapper, notched ears and everything. Once, I watched him stand down a much bigger tom in the backyard. Took over a year, but he eventually let me pet him.
Been on this prune for a couple. Guy with a bucket stripped them back on '16 up to 40 and 50 feet. So I did a little reduction, dead wood, sort out the epi growth etc. Poor attachments at the bottom. Waiting on the deck contractor to line out the new deck near it, then cable it. Canyon live oak.
A lot of multistems in our varieties of live oak. More often than not, a single stem will get harvested. Then new shoots grow out of the root crown.
But they can grow that way too.
Ive got taco envy! Impossible to get a good one up here
Tall skinny removals today, old nest in the adjacent tree at about 75'. Chips around the leave trees to reduce soil impact from the mini. Log pile Of white pine in the foreground and red maple behind, almost all 21' which is what the log hailing guy can fit
This was the maple to remove on that multi-day job (40" DBH, ~85 ft, 6 distinct stems all over 50'):
Tree 60% leaned toward house, 40% went over fence towards neighbor:
After smaller stuff day one, took off 2 lower large limbs to get groundies ready for big limbs/negative blocking
Dealt with this on day 2; stem in the back going up about 55 ft leaning back toward house. Did not trust climbing to rig out due to break/rot/holes at stem base, so pulled it back (mostly successful, but some did end up in neighbor's yard; next 2 pics show cut above really bad part and stem stump):
Well, the contractor let me know on day one that the garage in the back, which looked kind of shabby, was due for demolition. Thinking about how dropping the stick might leave a major hole in the back yard, I asked if I could help. He said go ahead, just don't ruin the fence to neighbor's yard. I took advantage, and while I did break 2 fence boards, it was well worth it to once not have to worry about avoiding a structure...
