Hybrid gaffs and some chafe sleeve...

IMG_20250121_200042013.jpg

I've been wanting hybrids for a long time, but didn't bite cause they're spendy, and tree gaffs work. Also, it's not like I'm doing this all the time. Altissimus' new spikes got them back in my head, and Wesspur conveniently had 10% off spurs, and I wanted a calender anyway, so... here we are :^D

The old gaffs were a bitch to break free. Cut my finger a little bit, and had to put on heavy gloves to break them loose. Do you all loctite your gaffs? Not sure where my tube is. Might be in the truck or the office.

edit:
Answered my loctite question. The new bolts came loctited, so they're installed, and ready to go.

Yesterday we did the first tree job with the new lift I ordred back in October, a Dino 92RXT. 92' vertical, 52' sidewards. It can be 70' up (Nifty SD64 max height) and 40' to the side (SD64 has a max of 42' of side reach) while still 40' to the side. Pretty sure it's going to be the cliche "game changer."

The ninja uses one, he says it is the chit. He used to use a Nifty 64 I believe

Finally got the Rope Jack! Should be good for nice and tight pretension as well as some raising/lifting lighter limbs. Can’t justify a GRCS or Hobbs.

Reg came out with his grapple hook. This will prove invaluable doing decurrent pruning (especially end weight reductions). I’ve wanted a hook for years but never pulled the trigger. Can’t wait to try it out!

The Echo blower is a beast! It cleared 3” of snow off our vehicles and driveway. I’m hoping it will reduce raking on tree jobs. It’ll also make quick work of all the leaves and needles we have around the house.

Could you skid logs with it? Do they have real pulling power, or is it just to get through snow?

I bet they would skid just fine. The one on the right is hooked to a groomer. This guy has a John Deere 540B that he bought new in 1984 for logging. 12,000 hours, original tires, winch and trans never apart. It's been painted, but looks like it was new last year.

a logger finicky about his skidder? Didn't know there was such a thing.

12 k hrs on 41 y o machine and original tires? I'm doubting that

sno cats are amazing, Watching them used to be my favorite part about skiing :dude:

Snowcats are sorta fun...I had occasion to run one a few times, a USFS unit my Forest borrowed for some winter work collecting grafting scion.

They are not so much fun on very narrow roads with sidehill drifts, in steep country :|:.

Snowmobiles generally covered ground a whole lot faster, but not in near as much comfort. Fewer restrictions on where you could go. Those were a better choice for my work in the end.
