Anyone have good leads on Euro style axe handles? I broke my Ochsenkopf splitter today. Ash is a garbage material for a striking tool. I found an Ochsenkopf hickory replacement in German amazon for €42. Any place closer and cheaper I should look at? Oh, and it MUST be hickory, or have a real good argument in favor of the wood choice. If it's ash, you don't have an argument :^D

Thanks guys. I checked Baileys, and they didn't have anything, but Stihl is indeed Ochsenkopf. I'll dig up the exact model#, and either phone in an order, or make a road trip to the sawshop. I've been wanting to go there anyway. Calling is a little annoying cause he's Amish, and it's a shared phone. You leave a message, and he gets back to you. It's like email, but dumber :^D The drive is pleasant, and I don't mind going twice, so I'll probably just drive.

Yea, it looks like $40 is the going rate. Might be a bit cheaper at the sawshop. Ask him for a price, he pulls out the stihl catalog, does some mental calcs, and gives you a price cheaper than list. Asks if that sounds ok :^D

It's a bit of a hike, but it's a real honest to god sawshop, and I like dealing with him. Around here, the prices are whatever the catalog says, and they don't really know saws. They sell outdoor equipment, and have some saws on the shelf if you're interested, or whatever. "How bout a new mower?" :^D

There's some handle replacement options here that are hickory
This is the axe I have. Still poking around for a replacement handle.

From another discussion re handles, and the company @stikine just referenced.

Their catalog is a little difficult to parse, but a quick look is showing American pattern only. This is what it looks like...

You have some significant shaping in your future, John. You just need to allow for removing and rounding the front of the handle in picking out what to order, perhaps.

Yea, perhaps. I'm gonna look a bit more online, and if that fails, I'll take the head to the sawshop, and see how it compares to that axe. My head /may/ have a smaller eye cause it's lighter, but the shape should be the same. If that's the case, it should be easy to pare it down to fit. I don't think anything American would be close enough. Too skinny, at least with the handles I'm familiar with.
