Crime levels...
More crime or less crime, ...It all boils down to the basic concept between "Risk" & "Reward" !!!
If the risk is not worth doing the crime, crime will be less.
If the risk is marginal at best, crime will be greater.
For example...
Little Johnny steals a candy bar and gets caught and the police brought him home & told his parents what happened.
Scenario #1: -Johnny gets a 10 minute time out to think about his actions.
Scenario #2: -Johnny get a beating from his folks and told it'll be twice as worse if he ever does it again.
In scenario #1, there is no real risk other that it took up 10 minutes of Johnny's time. In this case, it demonstrates to Johnny the reward is greater than the risk and will most likely be repeated over & over again.
In scenario #2, the risk was made "painfully" clear to Johnny because he wasn't able to sit for a couple of days and is in fear of ever thinking about repeating his action. In this case , the risk is very clear to Johnny that the reward is just not worth the risk.
If there were laws made AND enforced that address the concept of Risk vs Reward, I believe there would be less stupid people getting off by stupid court systems that have been legislated by stupid politician's !
Trick is dialing in the punishment the specific crime so it's not rendered pointless OR overkill. But simply Just.
