How'd it go today?

On the 'news' it said much of it was caused by people doing outside burning despite the forests being extremely dry
A guy here was burning during the high winds. Later I went to see if there was a wreck because of a loud bang, and I saw a grass fire 300-500ft from where this guy was burning. Turns out it was unrelated, the neighborhood fuse blew, and the hot metal that rained down caught the grass on fire.

neighbors son had a bunch of trees fall in this recent storm, lost 2 cars and I guess the house, minimal details yet but they said they got the trees off the cars, I am supposed to go take the rest off the house, haven't seen pictures and I'm hearing this trough multiple people so info is being lost, gotta go see it for myself

waiting to get the go ahead on 5 jobs, pretty much guaranteed the 2 biggest jobs but still havent had a go-ahead on anything yet, so its a hurry up and wait kinda week

from a local guys ad on facebook

"X Tree Service We Do Free Estimates Licensed and Insured Professional Arborists we do all jobs “Big or “Small “Simple or “Impossible.. Will Beat Any Price Around…"

funny enough, looked up the company on the TN Secretary of state website, and they infact are not licensed, just claiming to be, even better is just like everyone else here, I can almost 100% guarantee he'd threaten to sue anyone that called him out for it

I think its time for us legit companies to stand up and do something, what say you? hard to run a business the right way when people like this are out bragging about stealing work from people by "beating any price around" while they aren't licensed, or insured, and don't own any PPE, and relying on customers that have no clue about proper work or how to run a business, its sad

I'm not even mad about another guy working in my area, or the fact he may or may not be reporting his income, but look at the tree, this is what he does after "beating any price around", you can bid a job to do it perfectly, even be a certified arborist, and he will talk customers into butchering trees and causing a hazard in the future for the next guy that comes out to finish removing the tree when it dies

That's healthy competition. Hacks like that make pros look good. Lots of folks drop dollars to chase a penny, they'll learn, even if it's the hard way.

Do I like guys like that messing up my neighbors trees? Hell no! But I bet they only get the one job from the customer. Meanwhile @CurSedVoyce has customers that he's been servicing for 20 years, and has a local reputation as not just an arborist, but an artist.

I've been at the job two decades, I've only rarely had insurance, and most of the time, not even an LLC. Credentials are meaningless in this line of work, skill and competency are tantamount. While customers may see things differently, I see no need for gatekeeping when Gravity has infinite patience, no forgiveness, and perfect vigilance. Fret not, youngster, forces beyond the ken of mortal man will see that "climber's" career cut short.

Or perhaps he will improve, someday becoming a skilled tree man, perhaps not. We all have to start somewhere. Don't sweat Half-priced Harry, just do the job to the best of your abilities and your work will speak for you.

On another note, the boss and I impersonated a line clearance crew before PG&E could come screw with a truly lovely set of blue oaks. Stephen has climbed literally every tree on the property at one time or another, and it really shows. Here's a pic of one of the cooler trees. 20250308_112055.jpg 20250308_112036.jpg

Bought a new to me “tool” yesterday. Nine years old but only 180 miles. It has pushed snow a few times and putted around his five acre yard since new.

I really want his place but it sold yesterday as well and was a little out of my price range. Slightly over a half million. Beautiful house, shop, and property

Dang! 500K will get you a 2K sqft home built in the 60s on a 1/4 acre lot around most of the Baltimore MD suburbs. Sounds like a reasonably priced market where you are.

Nice new tool/toy!

The banks have lots of money to loan out.

Property values have doubled here in the last five years. I am looking for a buddy of mine and found a 960sqf, third acre, early 70’s, kitchen looked like it was out of a farm house from the dust bowl, $378k. Just nuts!

House with or without some acreage are priced at insane levels in my part of the world. Frequently I see $500k on a starter house on a lot little larger than the footprint of the house and garage. The place across the road from us just sold for $900k...3000 sq. foot house, barn, separate shop/garage, and a tiny house type ADU on 5 acres. I wouldn't want the house, myself. It's a weird layout after being added on to 2 times.

A small ranch with a garage and not much land sold immediately for $1.2 last year. Same guy had just bought two houses at the other end of the street for big money in the spring. House behind the farm sold for $4.5 last year, and then the excavators and dump trucks showed up for 8 months, so far. Then they bought the lot next door, just because. Insane. "Affordable" housing in town is $350k to $550k. Affordable to somebody, I'm sure.
