I have a bit of a battery cable obsession, which, as obsessions go, isn't the worst thing. I feel that there should only be one style of battery, the 31S, just in five different sizes. ATV, lawn and garden, automotive, truck, and large earthmover.
I have been converting everything I own to 31S, which is the stud type large truck style. I'm done with post and clamp type connections. Studs also give you a good place to add jumper cable wires, which I am also adding to most of my sawmill equipment via Anderson connectors. The alarming part is the cost of good wire.
I got some new shrink tubing in the mail today, which is a new product for me. It's a 3:1 shrink ratio, adhesive lined tubing. 4' each of red and black was like $9. You can see the finished product on the end of the cable I started making tonight. Pretty cool, if you are obsessed like me.
I need to find a bigger box to keep all my parts in. I gathered everything together this evening, and there is quite the pile of stuff, at least more than I realized anyway.
The crimper does 1/8" cable up to 600 mcm, so definitely does 2/0. Temco is apparently the legit brand for these things, but the Amazon ones are half the money, and work just fine. You coukd probably find a 6 or 8 ton for $50 to $70 that would work well. Mine is a 16 ton, and overkill for my needs.
I got the Anderson plug installed on the mill this evening. Jumping a Wood-Mizer is a real pita. Not anymore. I think I need to experiment with the different dies for the crimper. They sort of squeeze the edges of the lug out, and make an eccentric hexagon. Otherwise, very happy with everything. I just need to neaten up the cable ties.
Well, we got the bid we were late for, go figure. Also scored two others, and finished the slash and dash near the casino.
Young Buck's mom fed me lunch, green chilli, which was delicious, and I was very grateful, since "home cooked" has become a rarity. Yesterday she fed me too. I think she's fallen on hard times and is living with her son. Good on the boss for taking his mom in, I know they have a rough past.
Passed the wild horses on the way to camp, made Campbell's chicken noodle for supper. It sounded good, but now I'm really hungry again but I don't want to drive. Which dog will win there, I wonder lolz. If I leave this spot, I won't come back tonight, I'll park up closer to town.
Pierce Wash, where I am now, is my favorite for its relative seclusion, while still being close to town. There's two spots out here, which I refer to as "Pierce Proper" and "Wild Horse", and I frequent them both. It was Wild Horse I was chased out of recently. My other haunt is the Fencepost Trailhead, on FSR 50. It's so close to the boss's house that if my truck should decide not to start, I can walk there with plenty of time to spare.
Let the boss run my 500i today, because neither of his saws wanted to start when we were at Hon-Dah last, they dont like the elevation. He really liked it. Said he might get me a set of West Coast dogs for my birthday, I said I need Gordy's air filter and a spark plug lolz. The dogs would be nice though, our ponderosa has some thick bark, and the stock dogs are kind of a joke.
Thank you sir. Yes they are, have been since I started. Nothing like having a purpose, even if it's just being the best employee I can be, the best who's ever worked for him. It's a small, simple goal, but it's important to me.
Keeping you in mind for jobs down here I could use a climber on that would be worth the travel - keep me in mind for up there. I don’t need much of an excuse to head that way, esp in summer.

Roger Wilco, David. I'd love to have something worth you coming out for! Also, I'll be far more available in a few months, like toward winter. If all goes well, I'll have affordable transportation by then, and can actually drive out there. Or elsewhere, for you other folks... may well end up buying a bike like @lxskllr advised... just need a goldwing or a road glide so I have room for the saws...
I just got back from the Scottsdale City Courthouse, where I petitioned for an order of protection (formerly known as a restraining order) against my psycho ex-girlfriend, Melanie.
I arrived at a premiere time of the day because there's absolutely nobody in the courtroom (the courthouse has 8-10 separate court rooms) that I was assigned to. Once inside, the judge immediately began reviewing my petition and then asked me a ton of questions about what happened to me. She then spent about 15 minutes inside of her chambers reviewing the statutes that might apply to my situation.
She eventually returned to the courtroom and informed me that my ex-girlfriend violated statute 13-1425 of Arizona law, which focuses around the "unlawful disclosure of images depicting states of nudity or other sexual activities and breeches or violations of a reasonable expectation to privacy, without consent, with the intent to harm, harass, intimidate, threaten or coerce the depicted person ."
As a result, the judge approved my request for an order of protection, and it will remain in place for 2 years unless my ex-girlfriend, for whatever reason, appeals the order and has it overturned following a trial. But there's pretty much zero chance that Melanie will have any desire to appeal this order. I will be notified by phone or text once she has been served the protection order, in person, by police officers. I wish I could see the look on her face, and the confusion on her parent's face, when they serve her ass. Better yet, I hope the police show up at her work, where she is a school teacher, and serves her in front of her coworkers.
Anyways, I am relieved. The protection order has stipulations which will make it impossible for her to send anymore pictures to anyone without getting into serious trouble. She's not allowed to contact me, or even commit a crime of any kind, or she will be in violation of the order of protection.
@Mick! I have some advice for you. The next time that you decide that you want to call someone a liar, you should probably make sure that you have even a single thread of proof. Speaking of proof, here's a photo of my restraining order, which has been signed and notarized, and clearly has my ex-girlfriend's name on there. I redacted private information for obvious reasons.
I'm not a liar, Mick. Let this be a lesson to you.
Dagnabit!
Boots are so dadgummed expensive! I think I can rob the insoles out of this pair for my other pair of Doc Martin's, but they'll have a limited life expectancy as it is.
Do I spend $50 on cheap boots that won't last long, or $500+ on good boots that I know I'll get my money out of?
Side note, these Doc Martin's don't have grip on anything. They kinda suck in that regard. Not all Vibram is created equal...
Bummer. I don't see an easy way of fixing that. First thought was ShoeGoo, but that would last about three steps before ripping apart. Maybe ShoeGoo on the inside to keep water out, and hope the crack takes awhile to spread.
I wear combat boots exclusively for work. I get them used(usually), and I haven't paid more than $20-$30, and usually ≤ $10. The more expensive ones were usually brand new. I have a couple pair I think go back to the 60s. I buy them when they turn up and squirrel them away til I need them.
I've run into size 13 combat boots a couple times, and they're usually in very good condition. Disappointing when I see some sweet looking boots, but no chance of them fitting. I'm size 12 regular. Depending on the boot, I've worn size 11, dealt with initial pain, but had some amazing boots once they stretched and broke in. I think my true size is 11.75, but a little big is usually better than a little small.
Gotta get them when you can. It's insurance. You can't just pop over to the thrift shop and get your pick of lightly used size 12 combat boots for $10. I could throw out all the boots I've hoarded, and still be ahead of the game money wise.
Also, since I don't get my pick of exactly what I want, I have an interesting assortment I can customize for the task. One pair that's almost sneaker-like, are excellent for rope climbing. A pair of NOS flight deck boots I have work great for spurs. Aircraft/tank boots are decent generalist boots. Not ideal for anything, but work for everything. I don't like steel toe boots, but the brand new ones I got for $10 are good for wrangling logs on the ground. I wouldn't otherwise wear steel toe, but since they're there...
