How'd it go today?

Cooking breakfast. Bacon and eggs and hash browns. I gotta deal with rear rotors on my pick up this morning and then start prepping for “Snowmegedon”. 8-12 predicted for monday. Just need to bring another load of wood up. Still waiting to find out if I’m working tomorrow. Most likely not, but I was supposed to go help the clearing crew. As long as they got the equipment mobilized it should be a go. Don’t know why they want to hand fall and not use the hydro ax. Guess I’ll find out. If they do call me off I might run in and grab the rake/ broom for the BMG. Sure makes snow removal a breeze.

I always liked hamsters. Had a few as a kid, but aside from my first, they didn't live long. Always got wet tail and died :^(

I forget if it was gerbils or hamster but my friends little brother had a couple. One of them gave birth to a bunch of babies and then promptly ate them all. 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️ Here's to better luck.

Finally winter here again in the armpit of America, so the fireplace has been running almost every night now. Had to dig the path down to the wood racks in the woods, as we've burnt through the 1.5 cords I keep up at the house. About 80 ft. down hill through 2 ft. of ice/snow (so snow blower was no good), so I had to shovel 3-4 layers, double width to get the wheelbarrow down and back. Took about 2.5 hours to shovel the path, around the splitting pit and around the racks to retrieve. I humped 6 wheelbarrows full back up, so we''ll be good for 4-6 weeks. See beverage update in the "What Y'All Drinking" thread.

I've been going through wood like crazy too. Mine's close, but the problem is it's wet. I've been pulling pieces off the tops of the pile, getting wood down lower, then replacing the top pieces as a cover. I'm also drying some on top of the stove after I get the fire going.

Cut up the log pile yesterday, split 2 face cord, unloaded and split 2 more today, all gone. Will need to get more logs out. Mother nature has us in for 8" of white shit by friday. With 7-9" on the ground now, its gonna suck.

Sounds like time for a JetSled instead of a wheel barrow.

The tile roofs are interesting. Not what I really think of when thinking of England. Is that pretty common?

Turns out, a mono wind blew down a tree right on topbbn of out staged brush we needed to burn. So we cleaned up the tree first and proceeded to do what we were hired for. Then cleared a drive way, again.
Home drying out now.

Didn't do much today. It was threatening rain, and the boss was doing other stuff, so I did some paperwork and went home early. Wasn't really feeling great.

A possum visited for a little bit today...

I had put some Wasa crackers out for the birds. They had gotten bugs in them, so I stuck them in the fridge for wintertime birdfood. The birds don't seem thrilled with them, but they disappear eventually. The possum didn't care much for them either. Don't blame them really, Wasa kinda sucks. Does anyone eat them? I forget what they're like, buy a pack, then remember "Oh, yea. These things suck" :^D Heavy slabs of mouth shredding cardboard. FinnCrisp and Kavli are much better.

Meeting with the crew leaders while most of the guys were on snow duty. Did inventory on new equipment as well. Also went over a base plan ( subject to change when we do a walk through tomorrow) on a ROW job we are starting. 5 days for almost a mile of ROW and 30% is wetlands which means no machinery allowed. All hand work. Apparently frozen wetlands is still wetlands. Turtles hibernate in there or some BS. We will just embrace the suck once again and get it done.
also have my nephew for a few days. His mom works full time and dad is on snow duty with the local airport. A snow storm like we are having can keep him on the clock for 2-4 days depending on after conditions. A half inch of snow means a mountain after clearing the runway. Imagine what it takes to deal with 6-12

The heating in our cosy little home away from home died 2 weeks ago.
Since the thing is old and it is not simply a propane heater, but a central heating system with pipes running all over, I was afraid that it couldn't be fixed,
because we can't get parts for it any more.
Local camper specialist fixed it and just now sent me a bill: $98 :)

I've sent people his way for years and certainly will do so in the future.

Time to head out, yesterday and today a friend from the woodworkers guild and I are setting up, removing rust, cleaning, sharpening, calibrating, lubricating, and waxing all the power tools in an old fellas wood shop. He had a fire in 2008, bought all new equipment after rebuilding the shop. Then had back surgery that went south. Only now getting back to his woodworking. Removed a radial arm saw from a built-in bench to install a different one that has a crank which lifts and lowers from the front of the bench instead of top of the column, so he can reach it with his bad back. He was like a kid in a candy shop seeing his shop coming back to life. His wife said she hadn’t seen him smile like that in years.

Just came in from clearing my drive, then 3 of the neighbors drives. My one neighbor usually does his and one of the others but had shoulder surgery yesterday. The third one uses a snowblower but with all the ice I didn’t think he would enjoy that at all. Time to go to work now

Cory,
Just another day at the zoo I call life. Post-Covid I'll be up to see what needs fixing in Fairfield, CT.

I guess I miss the long days working. I'm taking a break from crane crew, as it seems my friend stops looking for an employee whenever I work consistently. Time for tough love, as I am 'supposed' to be retired.

Tomorrow I have 21 ceiling lights to install. Then Thursday it's forecast to snow again, so clearing walks for the elderly neighbors and a preview for a two day tool auction (OCGD!!)
