@SeanKroll a while back I posted about using plentiful, handy dead dry oak stems just the right diameter to fit in a kerf and keep from pinching while bucking. Works a treat, like little rollers. Recently it occurred to me that they could be used for chunking down like this as well.

Those need to be put through the planer for a fraction of an inch, then drilled for keeper cord.
What if you put screws or nails thru so the head was below the surface and just a bit of the fastener point was exposed? Little spikes to bike into the trunk, like caulks.

It needs to ideally skid into the kerf tightly.

I have some larger pieces to experiment with.

Way easier than pushing rounds off without the rails with more horizontal travel. I easily pushed them with one hand while holding my phone.

They are slightly too tight for a 3/8" kerf in fir.

They need to slide in tight.

Mostly, they stay put on the spar.
Duh. 🤦🏻‍♂️

It’s a great idea. I have used UHMW plastic rails to slide 36” dia Euc rounds into the vertical splitter.

The correct right-angle/ "L"-shaped mini-lever (easily fabricated) would wedge open the kerf in the rear of the 'round' when cutting, then lift the near side of a 'round' to allow rails to be placed between spar and 'round'. Rails ever so slightly bigger than the kerf would make removing the bar/chain from the far side of the cut, upon completion of the cut, easy.

More discussion than vid :
