Yes, in the designated Wilderness areas we can't use chainsaws, so axe and crosscut skill is a must.

First time posting here, long time lurker.

Thanks stikine. Transmission lines just out of shot in most of the pics. The trees that were climbed had potential to hit or go inside safe approach, so they were climbed high enough to where they wouldn’t hit or we had another lay we could fell the head into.

With all the new machines: cranes, monster chippers, and mini-skidders the modern tree crew is in a league I never even fathomed 50 years ago. It is truly amazing the tree work being done by small tree crews today.
I am impressed.
In all that time the climbers / fallers work hasn't changed as much. Of course modern saws and tools make the climbers / fallers job safer and more efficient.
Either way... by machine or by muscle modern technology has made tree work safer, easier, and more efficient for all, but by the same token it also makes for more trees to cut and more situations to take on over much less time.
And never more does this work require being smarter, being more competitive and staying safe.
