It is a life style for some, Kyle. For myself, I have given careful thought to what I do and how I do it. Not really a random sort of guy.
Oh i get it, several here are the same way, including hopefully me soon. I just can't hardly imagine stacking it all that many times! Around here most will split up a huge pile, maybe tarp it, and then use a loader to move it around as needed. The fancy ones use the tote containers, or get bored and will stack it. Storing logs for several years isn't uncommon either, and then splitting for that year only in the fall. Touch it once when splitting, then again to put in stove. I got a buddy that's in the market for a much larger outdoor boiler than what he has now, just so he can heat his multiple shops and outbuildings from the same stove. I guess the top opens on it for loading up to 8 foot logs! Touch it never lol.

It's a mainstay here as well on two houses.
We used to process more for rainy days money. See a storm coming and put a load of wood in the truck and trailer for delivery.
We just take the day off now. Just do it for ourselves. Minimum wage work does not excite me. Better to rest up and make proper money as a tree service. Slowing down these days.

Oh i would never consider selling it, not nearly enough money in it around here, because it's all grunt and no skill (compared to doing a removal or simply going to work). I'm talking 100 bucks a face cord stacked at your back door cheap. I guess if i had a huge wood processor that would be one thing, but nah. I do drop logs off and have guys come truck them for me for their firewood tho. Actually one of my doctors has a big outdoor boiler, so i now have a dump spot in that county now too! He does mulch gardening too, so he wants the chips as well.

While processing firewood is a lot of grunt work you can do very well for yourself provided you possess the necessary equipment and most importantly a good engine ... Strength and stamina are needed in large quantities if you are going to produce at a level to profit nicely ... Anyone can bust their c..k for 15minutes ...... Can you do it for 4+ hrs and (given rest) wake up the next day rinse and repeat ? If not then doing it “old-school “ by hand / hand tools might not be for a guy ... Guy up the road owns a tire business and processes logs into usable product. He easily sells 2500 face+/ yr at 100 a face ... Log processor makes about 10face/hour and a conveyor makes piles that dwarf whatever meager amounts shown here ! If logs cost 40/ face and You sell for $100 that’s 60/face (minus cost of fuel , maintenance, upkeep etc) profit .... Even after all’s said and done if ya net $35/face (not unreasonable) and machine produces 10face plus that’s good $$$ , especially for “unskilled work” ... The “skilled work” is being able to design , fabricate , machine, weld etc to keep “SUGAR” runnin like a well oiled machine

I’m looking for a deal on a certain commercial splitter but I have no desire to sell firewood again.
I wouldn't want to sell wood professionally, but I'd do it as a side gig. One road I travel has an old guy that stacks ricks of wood sale. Lots and lots of ricks. He'll be out there stacking wood and burning scraps in a barrel. There's also a chair out there. Looks like a sweet way to spend retirement to me.

Kyle, do you have any idea of what fuel oil or for that matter, gasoline cost over here.
There is your answer to why I'll spend the next 1½ weeks cutting and splitting firewood to keep my house warm.
Of course, according to Frankie, that is WAY harder work than logging, so I expect to sleep well at night.

Not just according to just Frankie @ Stig ... maybe more difficult because of terrain , weather , chance of injury or worse but most certainly not harder from a physical perspective especially if you are using 500i to fell trees ... Odd that u whine about high cost of fuel in socialist “paradise” yet run gas guzzler 500i

Dont cry Frankie. Just got done pushing what was left of 4 cord of live oak rounds i did not feel like splitting back into the coals to finish it burning. Probably burn 4 more here, and 8-10 on properties I work because we don't feel like hauling it or processing it.
Probably give 8 cord away each year just for charity or helping folks out.

I bought a really nice commercial splitter, a Timberwolf alpha with a box splitter.. I love splitting wood with that thing. Cutting it with a saw sux though, was in the process of making a guilotine to cut it but tbh lost interest. I’ve split maybe 15-20 chords this year and mostly gave it away to friends. I had a customer call me last Tuesday and wanted a half cord of oak, I told him $125 and he bitched and moaned, then asked when I could deliver. Told him Saturday, he wanted it sooner. I was really glad Saturday morning I didn’t have to get up and go to the yard and load it up and drive out to deliver it and have him bitch about something.

I spend a fair amount of time just moving wood around. It all started with my oak, and I was just stacking it to get it out of the way. I'm still moving it around as spots in the sun get freed up. I try to think of it as exercise. I'd rather move wood than iron disks.

If by your question you mean have I done real logging in Denmark ... No ... here is how we roll here in WNY ... “Uncle Harvey” will show the straight -goods ........
No excess stacking is going on, only what is needed.
Wood comes home from work and gets dumped in the log pile. When needed, split it 'if needed', and bring it to the house. Wood is stacking within 5 steps of the stove.

Oh i completely understand why you would burn wood for heat, I'm installing a wood stove myself right now in between chemo. I'm just very impressed with the neat and orderly stacking in dedicated wood sheds, most guys i know just use a splitter and make a huge pile, then use a loader to move it around. The whole burn gas not ass thing, which I'm a huge fan about.
No, that's a natural gas pipeline (yes the irony
). I'm a steamfitter by trade, and then have a tree service on the side. I have built a few log splitters, never a processor but easily could. I've done everything from welding dozers and tractors to all sorts of piping installations in over 16 years so far. That's my truck and 1 of my welding machines, and can fabricate a bunch just at my house. Also got a large lathe coming once i clean my garage out some Here's some stainless pipe fabrications for a shit plant i believe....
Xray welding on rope access for increased mobility and not having to have scaffolding...
And more natural gas, this one leaking by a bit.
