The Official Critter Thread

One sleeps while the other stays alert, a good system. I guess the runt lets them know when it's time to change over.

I just spent a week in FL, the ocean was awesome. The beach was fairly clean but there was still a good amount of plastic to pick up, which I did. Saw lots of sealife from the paddle board, including 1 sea turtle. Also manatees, lots of cool fish, rays. Some big iguanas too.

The sea turtle population has absolutely exploded in the last few years Cory. They are almost a hazard to navigation in the warmer months. Did you paddle up on the manatees?

Wow, good to hear about the turtles, Ray, thanks for that input.

Yes we were on SUPS, 2 different times. They seemed to pay zero mind to us and we tried to not encroach on them.

We swim with them at a spring fed river near here, they're pretty cool critters. Don't let their sluggish appearance fool you, when they want to, they can really motivate. The old timers say they are fine eating too, locals call them sea cows. Did you take your boards or rent some? Wasn't sure if you drove or flew down.

Ray what do you mean you swim with them? Like play with them?

I figured they are capable of a burst given their huge, thick, mermaid-like tail.

We flew down, beat the 12'' blizzard by 7 hours :D and rented boards from this super cool surf place, there is a real buzz there, and they gave me a banging deal of $30/day for a brandy new 11'6'' x32" wide board. The wideness was cool

The owner of Boca Surf and Sail is a huge SUP fisherman, says he gets invites all the time to go fishing on powerboats but turns em down cuz SUP fishing is just too much fun. 8)

In calm seas, it's cake for anyone. In rougher seas it takes just a little practice. I've never sup fished but with just regular paddling, falling off is half the fun!

The surf shop owner showed me his gear, I wish I had gotten a pic of his pared down essentials- milk crate with rod holders attached holds his gear and is a seat, ancient knife, small nylon zipper bag with a few lures, fish jaw holder for catch and release and for towing home keepers. Each item had a small buoy tied to it ;)

Yo, get one. They are basically indestructible. Where you live, I would think that 'getting away from it all' would be rather easy to accomplish. But whatever, getting out on the water tends to be very restorative, imo.
