How'd it go today?

We do build stuff out of the trees, everything from lamps, benches, and kids chairs. Also make grilling planks, smoker chips, Hickory and cherry smokers, even make wall plaques with pictures or sayings on them.

If you don't mind me asking Did you actually hang up your saddle for good butch? Or are you just building up the energy for another go round

It's not a matter of energy, but no... I have no plans on breaking out my gear anytime soon.

But I still have all of it, just in case.

Jax had the same issue as D with the time change this morning. He's usually up and running when I get up if not before, this morning I was almost dragging him our of bed almost 30 mins later than usual. Made a bit of scramble out of my morning routine.
Finally got around to starting on the power steering rack replacement on my 4runner. I put a new rack in it just over a year ago, I blame the lift kit as it stresses the joints and the shaft play is in the same spot on this rack as on the old one. They guy at NAPA said it should be warrantied, but the final call is not his to make, so I'll be crossing my fingers on that. With the issues I've had with the suspension, the lift kit is coming out, which is not quite as simple as I thought it would be. The front shocks get a spacer above the shock, so the studs on the top of the shock are replaced with longer bolts and the heads slot into the spacer so they can't spin. We spun one trying to get them out. We had to torch every one of them, while trying not to melt and burn the abs sensor wire among other things. Anyway, my usual parts guy doesn't have a listing for the studs, or for the correct top plate for that matter, looks like we'll be welding bolts in place instead.

I've made a few things from scavenged / reclaimed wood, and thought of doing that as a winter part time gig for some extra income, but this year I've been pretty busy with equipment purchase/maintenance/repair. Stuff like that is always neat, and can be profitable if you have the market for it. There is a local charter school (Waldorf style, if you're familiar with that concept) that has a craft show/vendor expo type thing every year where crafty/artsy stuff seems to do pretty well. I already have a vm from a custy asking when I'm doing spring cleanup, so it seems this "off" season is already over and I still haven't gotten to most of the woodworking projects for the house that I wanted to do. Maybe next year.

Nice. Slow times might be good to learn to carve a bear on a stump. A guy that worked for me said his dad would whip out a $100 bear in 20 minutes. Way better than stump grinding, IMO.

The local Waldorf has a winter craft fair, which my friend works, along with another school fair. Three saturdays before Christmas, at three fairs, for her, for this year.

She working on stuff in her free time, building up an inventory over the year.

I know a guy looking to have a triple trunk turned into a bear carving. Conifer trunks, I forget what species. Should be cool when it gets carved, I hope I'm able to be there to watch.

Around here everyone likes the apple and maple planks the most. They are green wood milled at 3/8 of an inch and we cut them 412 inch pieces. Soak them in water, lay them on the grill and place meat or cheese and veggies right on the board. Gives the smoke taste along with the shorter cook time. Nobody around me sands them. I do make a non allergy, food safe bar oil though for when I cut them. Probably no need but I don't like putting food on oil soaked wood

Well my Lil boy must have went to bed too early, cause he is up and wound for sound. Thankfully we have the movie "cars" guess it'll be another night on the couch with movies lol.
Another update, the new baby should be here about the end of September. First ultra sound showed a nice, big, healthy baby. Still to early to tell if it's a boy or girl though.

Good job today, except for the wasps.

Three small trees in the back, that went well. Got them all dragged out to the chipper, then just a little Lilli Pilli in the front they were in that. Don't think they were those friendly Canadian ones though, got me from the back this time. Wasn't too bad until now, seems to have flared up now I want to go to sleep.

Slippery storm work people from the other day paid me today but as planned, stiffed me the clean up
I took a picture of the insurance adjusters name and phone number that he had on a piece of scratch paper while I was there that day. The scratch paper had the insignia of the local casino. I guess he played me.

btw, my son has been sick for almost a week and had some scary high temperatures and now a persistent cough. Now my five-year-old is getting it and my very pregnant wife has it. Which means if I go to work The two-year-old will take no prisoners. I have the chills and feel rather odd but I am trying to work and check in on them because we need the money.
Tomorrow I am supposed to start a very laborious pine tree. $5000 nearly for one tree.
Thoughts/prayers please.

You got it, August...everyone getting sick is tough. Sick all at one time is nightmarish. Good luck with it...don't let that pine get your number...maybe it will wait?

Thanks Gary. No Butch. Even though we have insurance, it is not quite hospital time.
I keep the hospital option open with or without insurance, but don't really hasten to go there.
