In my local, they are paid the same, others pay welders more. The only distinction is qualifications they have, and yes some welders get bent out of shape if you call them fitters. I will take any dispatch call i get, welder or fitter, they are both essential parts of the trade. Often they bump me to a welder anyways lol. Pipeline the distinction is huge, and welders get all proud of the fact they pass xray every day to keep a job, which is why they act like they do. I'm from a building trades hall, so the distinction really doesn't exist, welding is just another skill that just about everyone has, so we are all steamfitters together. In fact, in my hall they make the apprentices weld on everything they can, they are younger and need the hours under the hood while the grownups work out in front of them with the critical layout and rigging work. We also make them help with the rigging so they learn that too.
