You gotta skim through the vid, it's like watching paint dry, but the comments get interesting. I think it would have been better to have a deeper face and a faster chain. The back cut ended up "pointed" to the rear and I think that tension contributed. When double cutting, I try to set my min hinge thickness to the outside and then swing to or a little past my gun so that I know the center of the hinge is thinner vs. thicker. I also think that bore cutting probably would have preventing it assuming he didn't leave his hinge too thick. He would have had more time and been further from danger. Then OTOH boring isn't a novice thing...lining up cuts with a short bar...

Why do so many people think the face notch has so much to do with what's going on behind the hinge? The critical piece in that area is hinge thickness.

Back east/midwest/Europe it’s common to trim the flare for a face. (@Altissimus ?) I’m not grasping how face cut depth affects chairing.

You can trim the flare to create room/shape to cut a gob.

I’ve never seen anyone trim a flare as a gob.

I think I’m getting it. My theory about the hinge being parallel to the rings and delaminating was pre-existing and I have some drawings at home I was actually going to do a little video on re: understanding wood fiber, but the hinge under the COG just dawned on me.
