A neat trick when topping, especially on conifers, is to leave a stub just above where you plant to make your back cut... A foot, or two, depending on the diameter, makes a huge difference when you use it as a lever to tip the top off. You can throw a big piece with 18" of leverage, you just need to make sure you dont use too thin a branch thats too long and break it, if you get what I am saying... Its like having a crowbar.
I actually do that when I am flopping pines and spruces and such from the ground as well... Instead of putting a rope, using wedges or pushing it, I strip all the lower branches as SOP but leave one at waist level about 2-3' and tip that tree over.
* I never saw the adding weight trick.. Thats cool!
