Thinking about this.

Logsplitters are an area where the cliche`-"go big or go home" has merit. A hydraulic splitter with a 2 stage pump and a 5 hp gas engine can ALMOST do some work- in effect it will split about as much wood per day as a good guy with a maul and a couple of wedges. The guy will be slightly less tired if he has the splitter. GO BIGGER

Those electrics aren't all that bad . The one in the picture will certainly out preform some superman with a maul.I'll bet good money on that fact .

It has a 3450 RPM motor which is erroniously rated at 5 HP when in effect it's 2.8 HP . It gets stuck on real heavy knotty stuff but otherwise does pretty good considering . It did the majority of the wood in those stacks .

Because I have the larger splitter I don't use this little one much but it would come out if I needed to run two splitters .Oh BTW the baby splitter has a 4 inch beam .

If I was going to go electric I would ge a quality 5-7 hp motor. (Baldor comes to mind). I would also put a 12 to 14 inch 50 pound flywheel between the engine and the pump. Electric motors usually have more torque than combustion engines that plus the flywheel this setup should perform equal to a 10 horse splitter.

You hit the wedge there MB. It is a pleasure to listen to the cracking and popping of the wood coming a part.

Interesting idea on the flywheel Mike, hadn't thought of that. I'm not sure who makes the motors for the Ramsplitters.
Quiet is the KEY factor to this, but to Al and Justins point, it won't do much with the gnarly stuff, which I have yet to decide if I want to get into doing mixed wood or just stay with the Oak yet. The Oak will split like a dream on one of those machines, but Cotonweed and Elm would tear one up in a short time, as well as make me cry in frustration!

Baldor is an American company they usually make motors for high end woodworking machinery

Here we go, everything you need:roll:

Electric is a joke, IMO.

You have a mini, get a gas splitter, bring the splitter to the place you cut your wood from, split and load into trailer, touch it once not three or four times.

The handling issue is why I never got into firewood, and never will.

One more plus for the electric model is the brother inlaw won't be taking off with it.

The little Ryobi was for giggles, it's too small!!

Bringing the splitter isn't an option, I drive 100 miles each way for the Oak and there is barely room for the mini, no way am I taking up more room for a splitter, nor is it feasable to fuel two vehicles to get all the gear there.
IF, and that is a HUGE if, I get into the mixed wood it will be dropped off here and I will move it to the backyard and proccess it there. People are getting stupid wih what they want to lease land for a woodlot around here and I have enough room in the back to do what I want.

Then there is always one of these, just a hunch but I don't think I need one:lol:

Or this winner, he was on AS for a while, seems to know everything about everything, he had this for sale for a while, I forget how much, but it was crazy expensive!

HA!! I found a splitter I CAN take on wood runs with me! I can't wait to hear these comments:lol:

OK, I'm in a HELL of a bind right now, the back wont take the maul and like me one bit! Then I've little to no money to work with right now, I know this helps a bunch!
I'm liking electric right now, simple, easy to maintain, and I don't have to buy gas for the damn thing!
I have an H-beam big enough to build it on, but am out of gas for the torch, so everything will have to cut with the grinder or chop saw (keep this in mind please!)
I've also got a 16" stroke 3" cylinder, not ideal, but workable.
I've searched for 1 1/2 horse electric motors with little to no love, I keep getting 1/2 or 220 3 phase, I don't need either. The Oak splits pretty easy, keep that in mind. I want to build this to handle 22" wood I'm thinking, I can change the cylinder later if I need (using what I've got).
I don't want to use the mini because of the gas consumption, I can get a five or six horse gas that will do what it can for 1/8th the fuel, and I can quarter the large rounds with the saw easier and faster with the saw anyways.
Think cheap, think Andy (I know, Andy cheaping out again, who'd have thunk it?) But if you have some ideas, I'm all ears please!
