Back when my newfie Ursa was only a few months old, the trainer recommended that we lock the cat and the dog in the bathroom together and let the cat go to town on the dog for a while. We did this 3 or 4 times. As a result she learned to associate cats with getting her nose scratched. Now she will get up and leave the room if the cat comes through. It works even when we're not at home. But now I don't know what to do about the cat, who seems to take advantage of the dog's fear. If the 120 lb dog doesn't get up right away, the 8 lb cat will walk circles around her just to point out who is the boss and who is going to get bitch-slapped if she doesn't leave. The cat seems to enjoy being mean to the dog.
