Honda have had CDTi diesel technology for about 5 years. Surprised they haven't imported them into the US yet.

BMW x5s are a terrible vehicle. All show no go.
Paul, my wife's is a passat sw, a '99 model. You would pick up one over here with low miles for about £2k.

If you want a mini van, again I would say VW. A sportline tdi van is an awesome vehicle.

Wow Id love to get the van but Im sure they wouldnt let me import it because of their crazy EPA requirments. I wonder if I could register it in Uk and drive it here......

What milage does the sportline get. FWIW TDis are REALLY hard to find over here. Seems crazy to me that soccer mums drive vans that get milage in the teens when you can buy a Dodge Sprinter with a Merc diesel that gets close to 30......
 
I think the import restrictions apply only to new vehicles? I know a few people with the VW sportline vans, and they get 45 - 50mpg out of them. Not the cheapest vehicle in the world, but you know it will last a lifetime.

Oh you know it just depends on how you look at things .They have mini gassers that get mid 20's on gas .Sure a smelly diesel might get 30 but diesel is higher than gas price wise so how much do you really save in the long haul ?

Just my opinion about it .On a big truck like a bucket or chip hauler a diesel is the way to fly .On a passenger vehicle I have reservations about diesels .

Ok Im sold, Ropetek needs one to deliver Wraptors. How do I get one over here Ed?? Obviously I have family over there who could help out but how do I go about actually importing a used vehicle. Could I leave it registered as a UK vehicle, would it be cheaper to buy in Germany since UK taxes suck???
 
Gotya covered .Buy the thing in Germany .Have it shipped to China then to Mexico .NAFTA,no taxes .Of course you'd have 30 grand getting it shipped .
 
Yeah Ed in some instances they are indeed .However keep in mind you are compairing Europian thinking and methods with north American mind sets .

Although they were tried in the past ,small diesels have never caught on with the buying public .They did in the day have better milage but also had a huge upcharge ,cost a fortune to repair and were hard to start in winter plus they smelled like a bucket of stale butt holes when they ran not to mention rattled like a tin can full of gravel and were slow as a snail .

Sure they've improved them but also vastly improved the gassers .In time perhaps the North American buying public may embrace the small diesel but that time is not now .
 
I have an imported a Toyota Landcruiser from Japan and the Canadian laws are that the vehicle has to be 15 years old in order to import without massive taxes. I believe that it is 20 years for the States.
 
That's a shame. Although it does support US industry, it also makes things not available to you prohibitively expensive. Your basically stuck with what they want you to purchase
 
Nope! VW and BMW are the only ones, that is why I recommended the Beemer, you can get the diesel in it in the states.
Al, these new diesels are NOTHING like what we used to have in the 70's and 80's, you are talking 20-30mpg, these things get 60-70mpg and 200-300k miles out of them if you maintain them right. The "big three" are way behind on this curve, they are the majority in Europe, not the minority like they are here.
