OK so the family vehicle right now is a Honda Odysee which has 240K miles and is a gas hog IMO. Since Ropetek has been making some money I thought maybe it could buy a car. So now Which car???

I would prefer to buy a domestic but havnt found anything that gets good mileage and doesnt cost a fortune.

Ive been interested in the Kia Soul as it gets 35 highway and costs $13K with a great warrantee but obviously it aint US made

Need to look into the Pontiac Vibe, but then again thats just a Toyota right??

Any ideas....

Brian the Edge is interesting but $30K. Sometimes being a cheapskate is tough. Must admit I was impressed by the 30mpg highway...

Mom and Dad just bought a new Mazda CX-7, owned by Ford, $24k with leather, sunroof etc, it's damn nice!
I also agree, Toyota is about as American made as you can get, my F150 was parts in Mexico then assembled in Canad.

So you're saying your wife and kids aren't worth a $30K car? If she's driving almost 20K miles a year then she damn sure deserves something comfortable. And reliable.

:D It's true, there are many American jobs created by toyota, I would venture to guess more than any other foreign manufacturer

Toyota....jobs get lost too. My friend has a Nippon Denso car repair place that works mostly on Toyotas. Whenever I'm over there lately things look pretty slow, and he complains about the cars not breaking down.

I hear ya Brian but old habits die hard. Cmon man my chipper (aka Frankenchipper) has 9000 hours and is 17 years old:lol:

FWIW Sam wants to keep the van, evidently pumping gas doesnt bother her.

I drive a VW TDI and have gotten 55mpg on highway trips and with 215,000 miles it keeps on keeping on.

Morbark model 17, man I love that thing. That being said I may be buying another chipper today for a back up......

Need some deductions which is why I was thinking about a new to us car....

A Mazda will just be a redesigned Ford with a Ford engine in most cases .I'm not exactly certain who owns what but Ford has a big stake in it .If it has a 3.5 or 3.7 DOC engine I can tell you exactly where it's made .;)

Statistically you'll find that in most cases no matter who made them .They can talk "the good old days " but these are actually the good old days in comparrison to what was .

Tell him Brian!!:) Also, lots of 0% interest on new cars and rebates if you put a down payment down.

I know a few mechanics, Al, and they all seem to be complaining about cars not needing much in the way of repairs these days. We have a twenty-one year old Nissan with a hundred and thirty thousand kilometers on it, my wife's car purchased new and she doesn't drive much, prefers to walk or ride her bike to do the local errands. It would have less mileage, except I drive it now too since selling my truck....mostly to tree jobs. Basically, all it has needed are belts, one shock absorber has gone out, and some work on the brakes. Still running strong too, hard to believe, but seems to drive almost good as new. If it wasn't for the mandatory annual or every two year vehicle inspection (depends on type of car) that brings income to the repair shops, things would be very tough indeed. Even if being forced to have your vehicle inspected doesn't sit too well with a person, there is no arguing that it does keep cars in good running order. In all the years that I have been here, I can count on one hand the number of cars that I've seen broken down on the road.

Perhaps it's the same in the states now, I haven't a clue.

As a side note, my friend, a life long mechanic, tells me that there is really surprisingly little difference between cheaper and more expensive cars, when you get down to the nitty gritty of them before the cosmetics. He's a specialist in automotive electronics in particular.

If you drive a VW tdi already, why not get another? My wife's VW tdi does 55 - 60mpg and is supremely comfortable and fast. Just turned 210k miles with zero problems.

Ed, you have bigger gallons than us;) I have a Jetta sedan and it is too small for the family. I have been looking for a Passat station wagon but I dont like the new ones we have over here with the Urea fogger in the exhaust. I got all excited a month ago when I found a prestine 96 passat on ebay with only 70K miles. Evidently a lot of folks liked it to because it got bid up to 9K in 3 days and then the auction was pulled:|:

Also as stated I would prefer to buy domestic but cannt seem to find anything I like.

Somebody needs to make a diesel mini van

It depends on what you want .You might think you can buy a "high end " vehical and expect better than average preformance which might have been true at one time .Then I refer back to that '90 Cadillac my wife had .

The car was a beauty ,got 22 MPG on a trip and never hiccuped farted nothing ---until it hit 100 thousand miles then it was just about a bad as a low end imported POS .

If you factor in things about say a 4 year old low milage vehical you're going to pay premium monthly payments if it's financed plus the length is usually limited to maybe 3 years .Where as most new ones will sell for about zero interest and go for 6 year if you choose repayments plus carry a manufacturers warrentee .

Just something to think about .
