Nasty pine bid

They use the tree monkey in Germany , Austria and maybe France.
It works fine for stands of trees that are all the same size, your typical tree farm.

Darin's idea with the cutting head from a harvester has already been thought of here.
We have an outfit that uses one mounted on a crane. That thing can reach about 100 feet up, cut big branches and tops off and hold on to the stuff untill it is on the ground. They mainly use it for topping lombardy poplars in wind breaks.

That thing is simply impossible too beat for a climber.
 
I think the entrepreneur is starting to come out in Willie. I'm waiting for the mention of a grandstand and tickets. Does highway 61 run anywhere close to there?

I hate those things. We need more jobs for people, machines don't have kids to take care of.
 
I know a lot of folks that wouldn't hesitate to pick cotton if it paid a living wage... the reason it doesn't is because machines are cheaper.... more money in the landowner's pocket, less jobs in an economy that is starving for'em.

The problem to me is, companies are constantly trying to cut humans out of the equation because humans have to live and that costs money. The only focus is on spending less money... think about that. What happens when EVERYBODY tries to spend the least money possible... money doesn't get spent, people lose jobs, companies go under. The only beneficiaries are the people in finance because they're holding the money that's not being spent... and they come up with lots of creative ways to make it into more money... not tangible, valuable ways but tricky, complex ways so no one can figure out what's what.

The pressure to use machines instead of people basically comes form on high, from large stockholders who can make a company president do anything they want... and they only want one thing, money, fast. That pressure trickles down to amount to grossly inadequate wages and a never ending search to cut costs... and the spiral continues.
 
Funny you should say that, yes, I've been called a luddite but that's inaccurate, seeing as how when I was young I made my living in microwave a satellite communications and then network data communications... I like technology. I'm a human-ite. In my world, people matter more than money, even the people I will never meet or know. I've made LOT of money in my life and lost just about as much and through all that I've learned what is really important to me and what isn't. Money isn't. I can always make enough to live.

Frankly guys, I'm on a tear right now, I'm hating greedy, ignorant short term fuckers more than ever right now. They bring about huge amounts of misery in this world and return precious little value... so pretty much everything I'm writing is turning into something about greedy assholes. It's annoying to everybody, I think I'm gonna censor myself a while longer.

I'd Humboldt the top pretty much even on the backcut, and like you said Willie snip er right off if it committed securely. But I'd probably be your comp's bid, the one who's not going to get it.

Don't be so hard on the beaver idea. Wait until you see a video of that little fur ball in action.
 
Chip, Im with you, I think greed is going to be the downfall of our society. Unfortunately I think we are too far down the road to turn back. Nowadays nobody cares about right and wrong its just about what you can get away with. Shame that the populace accepts that presidents lie.
 
Willie, does the top lean as the base does, or does it straighten to vertical/ near vertical?
Can you assess the lean of the top?
How is the exposure of the top of the tree to wind?

Sounds like it pops out of the canopy for at least the near vicinity. Is this so? What is the topography of the area? Is it going to have up-canyon/ down-canyon winds with the temperature rise and fall? Do winds typically come up in the afternoon?
Do you have an idea of the timing in the day?
Feeling of how long you think you'll want from start to finish, at least to get the top out and spar down a bit?

Why couldn't the powers that be have come to this conclusion about the tree removal during summer's more stable weather patterns? I hate when people leave hazard trees to the wet and windy season. It should be worth more, as extra hazard pay, yet tree people are often "hungrier" in the winter slow season, and are competing more, so seem to have lower bids than during the high demand season. IME, production goes down and costs increase in the winter, yet bids go down. A screwy paradox of our industry.

Getting a little complex there. If it's windy, we would wait for another day, otherwise , once the top is off, we would just finish the tree. I mentioned already that the top favors the best lay if I remove a small tree or two and some limbs. Timing would be start in the am and probably be on the ground by 2

Its a tough, tall tree, If I were climbing it, I wouldn't sleep 100% soundly the previous night.

I was just up 100'-ish the other day, when it was seemingly calm on the ground all day. My perception was that the wind was only blowing a bit when I was near the tops of the two trees where I had to get within about 20' of the tip top. Seemed to sway more than a bit. Morning might have been calmer, too. Just thoughts on wind. Kinda freaks me out a bit trying to figure what an extra 200 pounds in a tree top does to the physics of a tall tree in the wind, especially with most of the branches stripped off below it, and sticking above the main canopy.

Willie, would your strategy be to limb it all on the way up and move faster, or leave some limbs as energy/ sway dampeners until the top is out?
