They probably are worried about that being the case. Paying the ransoms is unsustainable though. The pirates will want more and more.

Some rich private military company like Blackwater should offer escort boats through the Gulf of Aden. They could have a "mother ship" anchored in international waters outside the Gulf and about 20 armed escort boats for hire. Once pass the Gulf, piracy becomes a non-issue.

That way the ships would be unarmed and have no problems going through the canal. Once on the other side, armed escort boats can travel with them till they are out of danger.

simple, effective logic from the Hawai'an, good deal Wes. :) Although maybe not Blackwater, but I like the idea of armed escorts through the danger zone(s)

What I don't get is why nobody has stationed a boat with a couple of Harrier jetfighters in the Waters outside Somalia. They could get to pretty much any part of the area within a ½ hr.
One strafing run and it's game over for those little boats the pirates use.

and for pirates in bigger boats? dare I suggest:

You can't believe how much those big guns light up the sky unless you've seen the big ships fire on target at around midnight . The last I saw was 40 years when the New Jersey was attempting to blow Viet Nam back into the stone age . I doubt seriously if those big guns will ever be fired again .

BB64 USS Wisconsin

This is up close and personal of the Wisconsin taken the last time I was in Norfolk Va .

Difficult problems often have simple solutions but simple solutions are often too hard for some people to accept.
"
"If no one would negotiate with them, if they never got paid a ransom, if every man's hand was against them and every nation on earth sought their destruction there would not be much incentive to continue committing acts of piracy"
:beerchug:

Human nature dictates if presented with 2 difficult options predominantly they will choose the easiest way out,I find it interesting what people are willing to die for.Pirates are bluffers and the folks on the ships don't own the cargo, this leads to scenarios that over history have been a willingness to relinquesh said cargo with the hope of appeasment.
This has also shown itself to be folly on the part of the carriers as the pirates will continue to fill a botomless belly.
History has also shown that if selflesssness is given the opportunity and thoughts of others is employed then usually tyrany is thwarted and the puveyeors of this tyranny are reluctant if not unable to continue in the ways of it.Dead or disabled bastards can't steal!!!
Gotta have that willingness to sacrafice mentallity and the backing of a govt. that understands the big picture;SEALS still ROCK

I can see Disneyland discontinuing their ride after all this bad news about scumbag pirates. Who wants to go on a ride where you might get attacked by negroes with grenade launchers :O

Not too swift, are they?

Boots on the ground didn't deter these morons from business as usual in '93, a couple of naval ships likely won't change their minds either. They are like roaches, some are going to slip away unscathed, no matter what the weapon.

Maybe a ship load a month delivered to shore will satisfy these beggars. Has to be cheaper than the tolls through the canal.

We'll give them French ships only.:D

maybe someone can ask the leaders of north korea and iran to used the pirates for target practice?

I dont understand how a massive container ship cant be turned a few degrees to port or starboard and smush the shitty little skiffs the pirates are using. Maybe drop the anchor on them. use a firehose to fill their boats up and combat bouyancy?

RPGs are fairly potent devices.....maybe.

Paul, Big ships respond slowly to the rudder. Certainly the ships could easily run down the boats the pirates are using if the pirates would stay in their path but imagine a 450 lb woman trying to stomp a chipmonk to death. She'll crush it if she scores but the chippy is unlikely to be there when the foot comes down.

How about a electric cable on the entire perimeter of the boat, so when they throw up there rope and hook they get fried with 219, 220 whatever it takes...

Those big container ships are nothing but a barge with an engine .They make 15-18 knots at best and won't out run anything . I doubt seriously if one could be sank with a hand held rocket launcher .

Cargo ships generally follow designated "sea lanes " and don't vary off course much. A straight line is the closest distance and fuel and time is money for the shipping companies .

It's simple for the raiders of the oceans, just sit near a shipping lane .Sooner or later one will come chugging along for the taking . Like shooting fish in a barrel .

I would just take the long way around, and avoid them. I can't believe the way the media says the "millions of miles of open water" can't be patroled.

Frig that.. Blast somalia back into the Stone Age. We'll get over it. :drink:
