Do you use a wire/long steel rod fid for the drenaline?
I have been watching the splicing vids and all it seems to need is patience and a 50cm or longer wire fid

I use a piano wire fid mate. New rope is super easy but this one was a bit tougher as the cores weren't sitting completely parallel. Push the fid up the outside with a bit of slack in the cover and it's fine

My understanding from personal experience is used rope is a mofo to splice. Perhaps not so bad if it lightly used

It ain’t fun either. Used rope just takes more time and is frustrating. One thing I’ve found is that having more line before your cleat is better. It seems that having more cover to work with helps final bury.

Ha, used rope was the first and last time I did splicing. It came out well but yeah nah

I spliced a used climb line once, a well used one, after a chainsaw(s nick.. The main problem for me was to extract the core. It was like glued inside. The inner strands were molded by the crushing action of the outer strands. The fibers were probably worn out too at each contact point, but they didn't show any major damage. The core seemed to have the surface of a threaded rod.
