How's the splice today?

How do you do the splice Stephen? What I do is stick a marlinspike into the twist to make room, then put a Swedish fid into that, then place the strand. My two problems are my tucks are lumpy and ugly, and after a couple rounds, I lose track of where I am. It becomes congested, and I end up tucking into the wrong twist.

I use a proper Swedish fid. Tape the ends of each strand. Pay attention to the twist of each strand. Once you have the strand pushed under the proper strand in splice, twist the strand in its natural.direction. this will help if you do it as you pull the strand through. When you tape the ends, also run the tape so it pulls the direction of the twist inthe strand. It gets harder as you progress. But it does get better with practice. And I burn the ends as well. 20250110_174705.jpg

Since it was right here, here's my ⅝" splices. The red is marking the end I considered "good", but looking at it now, it isn't substantially better than the other end.

I put a Gibbs on one, and the Petzl Micrograb on the other. My Macro is on my 5/8ths cable core.
I used the Micro grab in case Kavey wants to try it. His little 1/2 inch cable core has a 2 way grab (about the same size grab) I detest it. I showed him why. I have let him use my small positioning lanyard with Edelrid steel clip, Ocean prussik and pulley tender. Every flip line or lanyard I sport can be tended one handed.
I was misled by the color of your Micro. All my Micros are red, and the Macros are purple.

Of course, for that diameter rope, it wouldn't have been a Macro :|:.

Not really. I'm clearly doing something wrong, but I don't think rolling would help. Treemaster's a hard lay line, and it's kind of a bastard to splice. Everything just wants to stay in a hard knot. I can do a nice job with promaster. That's a soft lay rope, and I kind of roll that. I'll dig my saw lanyard out, and get back with a demo.

edit:
Here's ⅜" promaster. Big eye on one end, small on the other...

I find hard lay makes a nicer splice. I melt the strand ends and that seems to help keep the twist twisted. Sometimes on a tough tuck I’ll put the end in the vise pull it nice and proper.

I watched a splicing video by Brion Toss years ago. When he started a 3-strand splice, he would straighten the fibers of each of the three strands. (Much like combing out hair). I had always tried to keep the rope’s twist intact throughout the splice, but found his method yielded better results so I’ve been straightening them ever since. My biggest struggle with splicing friction savers is getting the initial crown splice right when attaching the ring. I have to go back and look at one I did prior to get it in my head how the three strands enter and how they lay for the best results. Of these three savers, the older one on the left looks the best. The one on the right is fair, the middle I am not happy at all with. They will all function perfectly, I’m just picky about the way they look.

Tightening of the crossover and pinning it will help w that saggy cover.

I spaced my foot ascender on a job, don’t ask how cause I can’t remember.
So….. I made this thing… spliced a plastic rod from a Throwline cube into it.
Just gotta get the bungee from ace tomorrow.

I also got this idea with the leash parts for carrying slings ezr on the saddle.

This is old stuff 90’s, I bought this off my old boss in 2006 as a retirement gift.. a Hobbs device and block for $800 cash.
Don Blair made them for Ed Hobbs. Chris Gerard has a museum.
Blair continues to sell equipment online at Blair’s Arborist Equipment…..

Anyway I recently got into conversation w Chris when I asked him particulars after opening up the block to clean etc..

My old bosses used these for big wood,, false crotch.. one inch slings. 3/4 rope…
Learn real quick, flip line goes over the rigging.
My buddy Evan used 7/8 line w it….

These days it’s all WLL, SWL and MBS…. Back then it seemed more like “she’ll hold”.

Three strand splicing I started on the crab boat.. tying pot ties..
basically 3-4 foot dead eye slings to lash pots together on deck.
We used the yellow shitty Home Depot line for it, disposable.

These things are great for lashing loads of brush together for dragging.. choker leads if u will.
