Climber's With Artificial Joints

Thanks for the kind words guys.

FJR, that's pretty amazing. I've never heard of getting a cadaver knee. Did you get their bones with cartilage attatched and/ or did you get their ligaments and tendons?? Amazing.

I just received the cartilage by itself. I had to wait for only about two weeks for the right match from a kid that was around the same age as me. I am very thankful for that, and that it one reason I will always be listed as a donor.

Remember folks, a lot of places require you to inform your family if you wish to be a donor in order for your wish to be honored. Don't know why, but I believe that its true. Doesn't hurt either way.

Technology certainly has come a long way in 30 years. The things that they can do for people now is truly a miracle.

With the modern medical procedures and the new SRT climbing methods, a tree worker stands a better chance of prolonging their career than in years past.

It sure has. That's an amazing story Fred, they made horror movies about stuff like that once.

Your story got me thinking about doner things, I thought there was an age limit here. Turns out it's just another urban myth, no age limit.

I'll probably tick it next time I renew my drivers license, except for a few creaks here and there most things are still working pretty well.

I see the orthopedic specialist next week for the right shoulder again; just a matter of time here, too.
In my dreams I am still agile and full of youthful vigor... sigh...

Donor status is right on our drivers license here. I've been a donor since I went through Nursing school.
I couldn't very well speak to families about donation of their loved ones if I wasn't walking the walk.

Wow Fred, thanks for telling us!

Re: hydration for joints...I've been wondering about this lately, since I moved to Tasmania I've gone from being used to 80% + humidity to now something around 40%ish...talk about dry skin!
I've also noticed that my joints seem extra achey lately, elbows, shoulders...ok things that have been injured in the past, but never really bothered me chronically, I was working hard right up till I left Bermuda and wasn't this achey, ever!

I know I don't drink a lot of water, so do you think that being in a low humidity climate and not really being on top of hydration can lead to joint issues, especially joints that have had some trauma in the past but were feeling otherwise ok before?
Could it be that simple, drink more water?

Fi, I'm having a huge success with glucosamine sulfate supplements. I've had achy joints all my life but the last few weeks have been surprisingly pain free.

Yeah I've tried that periodically...but maybe not for a long enough time...what brand and strength do you use and how long have you been taking them?

My best advice is take a daily supplement of fish oil high in EPA and DHA for life. As a January winter born baby my mom kept me on cod liver oil and today I buy the best fish oil I can find.
Even injured my shoulder's rotater cuff about 5 yrs ago and found just steady intake of fish oil healed it up nicely.
Another good advice is keep the extra body weight off, really hard on joints. Throw a 20 lb bag off flour on your shoulder and carry it around for a few hours.

I've been taking fish oil for years, great stuff.8)

When I was about six I had to spend a few months with my evil aunt and her American husband. He was a great bloke but a big Camel smoker, died at forty five due to that.

She was a nurse and first thing every morning was Scott's Fisherman's Emulsion.

My mum used to give it to me as well, but not a tablespoon at a time, and it didn't taste like milk.:barf:

Willard, she's only about 90 lbs soaking wet, I don't think excess weight will ever be an issue for Fiona.

Fi, it is made from ground crustacean shells so there could be something to the fish oil thing as well. There's so much about nutrition that we still don't understand.

Depends on what brand, I take about 4-6. Krill Oil is popular at the moment, a lot stronger but there are some things to read up on about it.

Flaxseeds and Chia are good as well.

What is the recommended dose? I take one big gel cap daily.
One capsule a day with at least 1200mg is the recommended dose, but I take 2 a day. The bottle says up to 6 day . Just make sure the source is from the smallest fish like anchovy, sardines and only a little from the larger fish like salmon. The large fish can have some concentration of mercury.

Nutritional supplements have their place for sure and they keep getting better and better all the time. I'm a firm believer in them and take them as well.

Unfortunately for some, the progressive form of joint disease will eventually lead them to having to have a joint replacement. I know that my day will come, but hopefully not for quite some time.

I agree about the fish oil, it is great stuff. I like good Norwegian cod liver oil and take 5-10 grams a day in liquid form.

Fiona, I thought most people, more aged specifically, find that the hot and drier climates are good for their joints. Hence the reason that desert areas like Palm Springs are/were such a draw for retired people. You seem to be saying the opposite about the drier weather, wonder why?

Well, its not that hot here, only locally for a few days it gets up around 80, I'd say normal is mid 70's...it still cools off nicely at night, but definitely way drier than I am used to.
Maybe with not working quite as much I'm not as aware of fluid loss, I KNOW I'm not drinking enough water, except right now I have a big glass next to me.
As for weight, OMG I have about 3 lbs I just HAVE to lose after the Christmas indulgences! It's all relative though...

The kicker might just be that which I am in total denial about...the 'A' and 'O' words, and having thrashed myself with competitive sports and a physical job for all those years...nahhhh, not time admit that yet... but 'scuse me while I put on my glasses to see what I've just written...
